OH COME ON!

DH just got hit. Someone backed into the passenger side of his car and now neither door will open. Person was uninsured.

We can't afford to pay the deductible.

Someone please tell me we won't have to replace the gdmf car seat at least.

I'm going to cry.

Eta: we have uninsured motorist but we can't afford the deductible right now. I mean, we can't even afford to buy milk today.

Did I mention DH drives a 92 Honda civic that will cost more to fix than it is worth? Yeah.

  • Holy shit, I am so sorry! You probably do need to replace the car seat with that kind of impact.

I hope you can recover some of those costs at least, though. Ugh, that so, so, so sucks!

  • If you can swing the deductible some how I have heard most insurance will cover a replacement seat.  I'm sorry this sucks!  *hugs*

  • Ditto uninsured motorist question -- I was in a hit and run and didn't have to pay the deductible because it fell under that. At any rate I'm sorry that happened -- that blows. :-(

  • Insurance differs by states but most policies have uninsured/underinsured included.  It isn't an option to leave it off.  And the deductible is a set amount ($250 in the states I've dealt with).

But insurance laws vary by state so this isn't a given for everyone.

I assume this is only if you have collision?
No.  At least not in the states I was licensed.  If you had liability coverage, you had uninsured motorist.
  • Uninsured is treated the same way as a hit and run.  Again, at least in my states.

    That makes no sense.
Every auto insurance policy I've ever had requires underinsured motorist coverage.  The underinsured property damage coverage is optional, tho.

@aditgirl - does the $500 have to be paid all at once or can it be split up into separate payments?

It just came with it.  You couldn't delete it.  It was an automatic coverage you got when you bought liability coverage.

After googling, it seems like it may be optional in some states and with some insurance companies?  I worked for one of the big ones in 2 states that added it automatically.

@CinemaGoddess‌ it's my understanding that it needs to be paid upfront before they will work on the car.
Is this your only car?  If you have another (or have access to another) could you be a one car family for awhile?

  • Do you owe any money on the car? If it costs more to fix it then the car is worth, can you sell it to a junk yard, or part it out?

No we don't owe money. I guess we can part it out. Just sucks because he will probably get max $800-$1000 parting it out, and his engine alone is worth $3,500. He will probably just look into selling his engine on CL.
He should look into selling the body of the vehicle as well, he might be able to get a few hundred dollars for it.

    Likely illegal advice ahead:

Every time I have had to get something on my car fixed (accidents, hail damage, hit & run, etc) the insurance check has been more than the damage costs, therefore covering the deductible. I would try going to a body shop to get a quote on the damage (it will be free) explain to the person doing the estimate that you are very broke and you need as much "cushion" in the estimate as they can provide.

Submit the estimate to your insurance company and hope they cut a check.

Also, if someone simply backed into my car, and they didn't actually hit the car seat (like the impact was on driver side and my car seat was behind the passenger seat) I would not replace it. That's just me, though.
    +1

We've been hit by uninsured motorists before, and I know it sucks HARD. We were hit twice in 6 weeks, both times by people with no insurance and I was so pissed!!! My husband has always personally dealt with the insurance company. He researched the cost of all the repairs himself as well as included replacement costs for things like car seats and then dickered with the insurance company over the amount. They will always low ball a number, of course, so he always started really high so we ended up in the middle at a reasonable amount. We always ended up with more than enough to cover repairs plus the deductible. Also, I don't think we had rental car coverage but we got them to pay for a rental (comparable to the wrecked vehicle which was a truck) for a week or 2 to give us time to have repairs done.

If repairs to the car will be more than what it's worth, then like pp said, they will probably just cut you a check for the car (minus the deductible). Again, it's worth dickering over the price so if it ends up being the case, check the kelly blue book values as well as research comparable like vehicles for sale in your area.

So sorry this happened to you.:( Hoping everything works out in the best way possible!!

Most (not all) seats have to be replaced after any crash. In a proper use state it's illegal to use it if it requires replacement. What seat do you have and does your car have one for you to use for now?

I was hit by an uninsured motorist in 2005 while driving a 1997 Chevy Cav. The damage was very bad and that with the age of the car, my insurance company just totaled the car. They gave me credit for things like new brakes and tires which bumped up the value and then cut me a check minus the deductible. I would definitely have it taken to a shop and at least go through the claims process to see what they offer you for the car.
