Creative way of delaying return to work?

DS is almost 10 weeks, and I originally said I would go back at 12 weeks. I really feel like we need a few more weeks - he still BFs every hour sometimes, plus our nanny would now be watching him and our toddler (no small feat!). I have a fairly senior level position at a biotech company, but I went P/T a few months before my maternity leave. I don't think they'll be crushed if I want to wait, but unfortunately my boss (a sr. director at a large company) returned to work 6 weeks after her second a few years ago (not sure she'll have much sympathy). Any creative ideas on how to play this? I could say that he won't take a bottle yet, but I think she knows that if you force that issue the baby will figure it out.

  • Say that the nanny has a scheduling conflict and you won't have childcare available when you originally planned?

Or just tell the truth, that you and LO aren't ready yet.

  • PPD that may affect your work until meds kick in 2-3 weeks from now. Legally they can't judge!
  • I feel your pain, I know how political these things can get and if your direct manager won't have much sympathy with you taking an extra few weeks, that really sucks. Could you say there's an issue with the nanny? Ie- she needs a few weeks off for family reasons, etc, so you need to delay going back for a few weeks.

While this may work, I don't think lying about PPD to get out of returning to work is a wise choice. And is kind of insulting to those legitimately struggling with PPD.

  • Just tell the truth. Personally, I'm not a fan of any type of lying unless it'll save your life.

  • I think you're only legally entitled to 12 weeks FMLA per year, regardless. So you could be terminated I guess ???

I also think it's never a good idea to lie. I'd be honest.

Also lying about ppd would be really distasteful.

  • I am stretching out my leave by returning part time for the next few weeks.  It is giving me a chance to ease back into work.

  • I would go the truth route. It's your job. Lying won't get you anywhere. Especially if you use a reason then slip up down the road accidently and they put two and two together.
  • I'd be honest and say you need 1 or 2 more weeks. Let them judge if they will. I only took 10 and am now kicking myself. Thinking of telling them I'm taking 2 more. Don't care if they are unpaid. I'm just not ready to leave her

To be clear, not trying to outright lie. Agree it is tacky and unnecessary. Just trying to spin it a bit so she actually sympathizes instead of getting annoyed. She will see it as a dedication issue if I don't have a legit excuse in her eyes.
I'm in CA so my job is protected.

I apologize for any unintentional insensitivity. I struggled with PPD and I know it is real.
  • Have you looked into Paid Family Leave? You can tack it on to the end of your regular maternity leave, and get (I believe) up to 6 more weeks off. This does not have job protection (in CA) but if you mention it to your supervisor, she can give you written permission to take it. That's what I did, and with the written permission, our HR lady said it serves as a sort of protection for me.

  • Good luck, I tried to extend my leave and was honest. My boss would not approve it and stated I was only entitled to the 12 weeks....plus she made me work my first weekend back and the fourth of July holiday. Awesome.
