What would you do?

So I have been offered the opportunity to work from home as I get closer to my due date. I would really like to because it would be much more convenient in some ways, but not in others.

My office is about 5 minutes from the hospital so in the event I have a quick labor I'm right there. However I would be mortified if my water were to break all over the place in front of my coworkers. My back pain has so been bad so I've been really uncomfortable.

My house is about 35 minutes from the hospital without traffic. I'd be more comfortable working from home because in the event my labor is not quick I could get a shower, get my house situated, and overall I'd be more comfortable working from home. However if my labor is fast I'd be out in the boonies all alone and wouldn't have anyone to drive me to the hospital.

I'm thinking about just playing it by ear as the next few weeks go by since obviously I can't plan any of this, but just wanted to see what y'all would do, especially STMs

I would work from home in a heartbeat if I got the chance. Ftm usually have long labors. While it's possible, it's not likely you will have a precipitous labor. I would just have a plan in place on who can drive you if no one is around.

I agree with PP, worst comes to worst, call a taxi or an ambulance if no one can take you?

definitely take advantage and work from home!! it is highly unlikely your labor would be faster than it would take you to drive yourself or even take a taxi to the hospital (if no one is available to drive you). you don't want to go into labor at work if you can avoid it. and if you're more comfortable at home, i say do it. most labors seem to start in the wee hours of the morning or the middle of the night anyway!

Good point about the ambulance, I didn't think about that. Unfortunately we have no taxis in the area that I know of but it's something I could research.

I technically *could* have plenty of people to drive me, it's just that they would all be in the city so I'm afraid they wouldn't get to me in time (esp DH who is working an hour away for the house). But the more I think about it the more working from home sounds like a better option, especially given that I'm a FTM

For the record my first labor was 14 hrs and started at 5 am. I showered and ate before going in at 8am and was only at 4 cm.

I'd work from home. I was in labor 6 hours before my water broke (plenty of time for DH to get home) and really things didn't get horrible (comfort wise) for me until my water broke.

I would work from home, but I wouldn't worry about what to do if your water broke. I found out yesterday that only about 20% of women's waters break on their own.

I'm about 40 minutes from the hospital. I'd work from home if I could.

Your husband would more than likely have time to come home and drive you to the hospital.

Heck, my parents had time to get to my house from 2 states away before I went to the hospital.

I'd work from home. 35 min isn't bad and Most FTMs are going to have plenty of warning.

This is me! I'm about an hour closer to the hospital at work but still choose to work from home as much as I'm allowed.

This exactly. I wouldn't worry about being less than an hour from the hospital as a FTM, the odds are REALLY unlikely you would have such a fast labor, the 30 minute time difference would be any big deal. You will have plenty of time. This is also coming from a mom with a history of precipitous labor herself. Being 35 minutes from the hospital honestly wouldn't bother me. 1.5 hours or more, that might bother me, but not 35 minutes

Thanks for the advice and perspective! Looks like working from home is going to be the best option. Despite my back pain I'm so looking forward to not having to wear real clothes
