Potty Training/Training Pants

So DC wants to start training DS and another little girl in potty training starting on Monday - which is fabulous with us.

They are encouraging us to get thicker training pants and showed us some that another child has - "potty scottys"

https://www.pottyscotty.com/Kit-0018.html

I am kind of shocked at the price of these since we will undoubtedly need many pairs of them and they are going to get peed and pooped on. I get they do need to be thicker, though. A 12 pack is like 100 bucks!

Is there any particular brand that some of you who have BTDT can recommend? Is it worth it to pay 10 dollars per pair for some potty scottys? Would gerber training pants work just as well?

Re: Potty Training/Training Pants

  • gee whiz, why are those so expensive? i'd get the cheap gerber ones. we are not "officially" potty training yet, but we let DS run around in the evenings in the gerber training pants and they are pretty absorbent.

That's exactly what I want to know! I'm looking at their website and they don't seem to potty train your kid for you or anything ;)

  • Um yeah that would be a no. They look like the gerber ones, but hopefully for that amount of money they wouldn't leak like the gerber (or other Target brand) I tried.

I know that people will completely disagree, but I like to start with pull ups. Yes, they are no different from a diaper, but they at least don't end in frustration with a million accidents all over your house and DCP when kiddo is trying to learn. They also help teach to pull down underwear and how long that takes. Once DD got the hang of it after a few weeks we moved to underwear. I tried commando for about half a day it was traumatizing to all involved - DD freaking about stepping on her poop, dog trying to eat poop - no thank you.

  • Ditto the gerber ones.  I also bought some from Hanna Andersson that were great, but DD really liked the gerber ones - she said they were very soft.  They do leak, but still better than pull-ups because they really get uncomfortable when they're wet.
  • We use the gerber ones as well.  We tried to commando, but honestly I was just tired of cleaning up pee all over my floor.

  • Just to update, when I talked to his teacher this morning, she didn't know the price of the Potty Scotty's she showed us. "You mean we have 60 dollars worth of underwear in little X's cubby??" She said gerber or something similar is fine and that they will leak but that's helpful b/c the kids (hopefully) won't like that and it will encourage them to seek out the potty. I guess it's like a mix between commando and a diaper.

My hope is that they've worked out a fool proof system (if there is such a thing) and this will be relatively painless for all involved. I just wish training pants came in cuter designs that DS would get excited about. Dinosaurs or something. It seems like Gerber is sports, which DS can get behind, but if it was robots or dinos it would be better. Potty Scotty's are just white...unless you want to pay 13 bucks per pair, then they have a design.

  • Looking at the site, you can get waterproof ones and they are only $7 more for 12 of them then the non-waterproof ones you linked to.

Personally, we are just in the very early stages of potty training. I would say more in the prepping DD phase. introducing the potty, talking and showing etc. But, we have had a few accidents when she has been naked for swimming, getting ready for a bath, or just gotten out of the bath.

I REALLY don't want to have to continually be cleaning up floors, DD, and potentially furniture from accidents. I know that my parents who watch her for us won't either. So, honestly, it would be worth $107 to me to have 12 pairs of waterproof training pants/underwear.

The laundry is nothing new to me since we have always used cloth diapers. IMO that is much easier than cleaning up accidents all day and cheaper than buying pull-ups. Just my preference.

  • We had the Gerber ones and they were great. The only benefit vs. the regular underpants was that if he peed a little it would contain some and not make a huge puddle on the floor. Also if he had soft poop explosion, it would contain and not leak.
