Carseat Issue!

My LO who just turned 3 months on the 7th and weighs roughly 15 pounds almost has a screaming fit once she's been in her seat for more than 15-20 minutes. I take about 45 minute drives to visit family/work and this crying stuff is getting to me. I've tried music, talking, singing, windows down, windows up, etc. I don't know what else to do. There have been times where I've had no choice but to drive the whole 45 minutes with her crying. (I know bad mommy) I feel like complete sh*t for it but life happens.

Any advice/suggestions?

Do you have any of the removable inserts still in the carseat (infant insert or head support)?  You can try taking those out. Maybe check the position of the shoulder straps and see if those can be adjusted up a notch?

Also, a lot of babies get hot in RFing carseats because there's just not much airflow.   Maybe try cranking the air conditioning in the car and see if that helps?   Or if you're already doing this, then maybe the baby is a little cold?   I know it's mostly trial and error, and it sounds like you've tried all of the things I would have tried...

Go buy a car seat fan from Walmart... 5 dollars... Best thing ever. You can clip it anywhere and blows right on baby, the feeling if that and the noise makes my LO sleep
  • Ditto the car seat fan. I also saw on Amazon the other day this little gadget you can attach to the seat to make it vibrate. I have also learned to time DD's car rides carefully - she does not fall asleep easily in the car seat so if she is overtired she just screams her head off.

  • I feel your pain on this one. LO can go two seconds in the car before having a meltdown. I just ordered a fan yesterday, so I'll report back if it works! Other things that I've tried with some success/am considering next:

    - Wiggling the car seat a bit. I know how unsafe this sounds, with one hand on the steering wheel, the other reaching back to move her, but honestly...after 20 minutes of blood-curdling screams..I'll take what works

    - the hair dryer sound on the "Sound Sleeper" app

    - holding up the light up/singing attachment from her bouncy chair (only when DH drives , obvs.)

    - I'm trying a bottle next! I'm figuring that if she's hot, fluids might help. Though obviously, this is for rides when it's not just the two of us.

    - I've heard of car seat coolers, but am wondering how effective they are when you remove them before inserting your LO....

Good luck! Please report back! I know how frustrating and isolating this can be....

  • Its also possible that she's feeling car sick.  With my older son we have to put a plain white receiving blanket over the back seat because the vibration of the car and the pattern on our upholstery makes him nauseous if he stares at it for too long.

DS1 was like this. The best trick we had was to turn on the radio to a static station and crank it up as high as you can stand. It usually zonked him right out, and then we could turn it down a bit. And when it didn't, it made it less irritating for me so I could at least be a less distracted driver! Also pacifiers...
