You really know you are a SN parent when...

You really know you are a SN parent when...

You take your DS to his dentist appointment 3.5 hours early because you mixed up the time due to too many appointments for therapy etc.

GAH!

Good news was we pulled into the parking lot and DS said "Open wide and say AH!  Dentist look at your teeth and then get a toy!"  He was beaming from the back seat.  His mood was just as good 3.5 hours later when I came back.  Dentist appointment was non-eventful.  All they did was look and smear the fluoride on his teeth.  Thinking next time they might actually clean them which sounds like so much fun for any kid, let alone a sensory avoider that is in feeding therapy for not wanting his mouth to touch most foods

  • That is awesome!

What did you do to prepare your DS for the dentist visit?

  • Honestly I just kept talking about it for two-three days.  I said open ended comments like "The dentist is going to look in your mouth and you need to say______."  A prompt to say "AH!" and then said "He will look at all those teeth and say they look so nice!"  Then I said "You will get a toy from the toy_______." Prompt to say basket.

He remembers the visit to the dentist because when I asked him about the dentist he said"You get blue toothbrush. You get a toy!" (He is speech delayed)  So obviously he remembered going at 3.5yo.  He didn't love the actual experience of the fluoride and tried to fight it a bit but then he stood up and said "Toy basket!"  So not traumatic :)

I actually did something similar to prepare for the baby when he was 2.5.  i kept buying things and setting up baby supplies and I kept saying "This is for baby C!" and made it a happy thing.  He has a great relationship with her from the very beginning and didn't seem to even question that babyC was just suddenly part of our lives.  i wish he wasn't speech delayed because I would have loved the experience of saying that she was in my tummy and that he was going to be a great big brother and all that romantic stuff.  However, I almost melted when he looked at me a few weeks ago and asked me if I loved babyC.... Then an hour later he said "mommy, I love babyC"  It was so sweet and despite his speech delay I think he actually knew what he said.  He also used "I" instead of third person like he normally talks.  He is always playing with her and giving her kisses on the top of the head.  I could not ask for a better relationship between the two

Thank you for your response, micelle!

That is awesome of how you prepared your DS for new changes!

I have had DS's teeth check with a dental van from the college but if need be, I want to be ready for DS's first visit to the dentist.
