We are looking for a 7 seater suv. We only have $500 to put down. Any opinions on our choices would be greatly appreciated thank you! We really want a ford flex but it's not in our price range. Even used in AZ is crazy.

  • I would pick a Chevy Traverse - but my only reasoning behind that is a grew up in a family where we only buy Chevrolets or GMCs. And my Grandfathers friend owns a chevy dealer and gives us good deals. On your list I would have chosen the dodge journey. Friends of mine have had really good experiences with dodges!

  • I had a Rogue previous to purchasing a Subaru this year. Is it a 7 seater now? My 2011 Rogue was just a 5 seater... Anywho - it was OK. It was a lease and started kind of falling a part a bit towards the end of it, but I probably would've stayed more on top of it if I'd owned it.

Yeah seven seater SUVs can be problematic unless they are the big ones (like the ones on a truck chassis).

  • Did they redesign the Sorento? We just got rid of ours (it was a few years old) and it only sat 5. That said we did like it.

  • We have a murano (bigger than a rogue) and it's only a 5 seater.... I would go with the outlander as it does have the extra row.
  • The rogue barely seats 5. When we have another baby we will need a new car. The car seat already barely fits.

FWIW, I currently drive a 2014 rouge SL, and they are way bigger then the old ones. Watch out though as the 2014 selects are actually just 2013 (stll smaller). The third row is only available on the 2 lower trim packages so I don't have it. I  decided against it while we have 2 in carseats sine it is hard to access and you can't use carseats in the back, give up your entire trunk, etc. plus I wanted the nicer trim/options.

I used to drive an outlander and thier 3rd row is optional and there is still a little trunk room, but not enough for a stoller, etc. As much as I dislike vans, I agree that if you need the seating that is really the way to go.

  • We are getting a Land Cruiser next month... All the cars you listed are small for 7 passengers except maybe the Ford. I agree with a mini van if you can't afford a bigger SUV. None of those are really all the practical.

We love our Explorer. The third row stays down most if the time, but without it, I don't think our massive double stroller would fit anywhere!

I sat in a Toyota Highlander the other day, and now I'm smitten.

ETA I drive a CRV.  I'd suggest a used Honda Pilot.  My sister has two boys, and they travel frequently and love it.

We have a 7 seater Kia Sorento, but the back 2 seats really aren't all that functional. I mean, they're FUNCTIONAL but inconvenient. It totally eliminates any trunk space to flip them up and then to use them, you have to climb over the middle row of seats.
I absolutely LOVE our Sorento, but we just happened to get  a 7 seater because thats how it was sold, not because we needed it.  It I had needed 7 seats, I probably would have opted for something more roomy and convenient.

I would also vote for a mini-van. We got one a year ago and love it. It has tons of space and I like way it drives.

  • I just got rid of my '09 Dodge Journey that sat 5 and did a happy dance to never have to see that pos again. Everything inside it kept breaking; sun visors, springs on the compartments that come down from the roof. Ugh!

We purchased the tank-like Nissan Armada and I loooves it.

  • Thanks for all of your advice. We are going this weekend to buy a vehicle. We only need 5 but wanted 7 so we will test drive a few put the car seats in etc. Thanx!

I have a Chevy equinox (5 seater) and love it, but looked at the traverse as well. It looked great, drove nicely, the mileage is why we went with the equinox (comes in a v4 or v6, traverse is v6 only). It has a ton of cargo space even with the 3rd row. And you can get captain seats.

  • I just got the pathfinder with 3 row of seats the guy at Nissan said it was better because they have more aggressive pricing and lease even though the rouge is cheaper it's more popular so it will end up being more expesive its great we just got it yesterday wooohooo and for a low price too with all the shinnanigans I'm so excited

  • I've always been a fan of the Chevy Tahoes. We had one prior to having the LO but it was always so roomy. Right now we have a Toyota Highlander and it is too small for us with my husband being 6'3" and usually traveling with our dog too.
  • We have a Sorento and love it. We don't have the third row seating though. What I love most about it is all the storage space in the back and you loose that with the third row.

  • Good to see these opinions. I'll eventually need a bigger vehicle and we would like something to be able to put the dogs in back so they don't get hair all over the seats, fit two car seats, and have a place for the stroller.

Looking at this list, I might need to go visit where the unicorns live.
Go take a look at how much space is in the back of a Sorento without the 3rd row. We have two car seats in ours right now.
