  This is advice from someone who had a horriable commute and who has had Fridays off in the past.  Go with the 40 hour a week job close to home.  The amount of time you save commuting long-term is way better than the 8 hours you are losing.  If you do the math using  2 hours a day 4 days a week that is 8 hours lost to commuting.  Where as with the new job you may lose 8 hours on Friday but it is only a 2 hour difference because your commute per week will be less than an hour and a half.

  PP have made good points. Have you looked at how much PTO you will have? Can you negotiate getting a little more PTO so you can take some days off to be with your family?

  I'd ask if there's any chance in the future they'd be willing to work with you on a flexible schedule, or if anyone else in their office has a PT or work from home schedule. Maybe you have to do FT the first year, then once you prove yourself you can earn more flexibility?

  
  

  I switched jobs about 2 years ago and went from a 3 day/wk to 5 day/wk schedule.  As much as I liked the 3 day work week, I really really needed to make a change.  After a year in my new job, I negotiated to go to a 4 day/wk schedule.  

  
  

  I also agree with PP that you should negotiate for more PTO up front to give you more flexibility.
