Bumbo

Curious if anyone is using a bumbo seat? I have a hand-me-down one. My girls are 4 months now (5wks early) so I tried then in it (no buckle or tray). They don't quite have enough head control yet. Curious your opinions on them?

This is what I used for DS and plan on getting another for DD when she's a little older.

  • Voted have/use, but we're not really using it quite yet. 4-6m is the ideal age so we have a few weeks to go still. I use it for 2-3 min when I need to put her down to pee. She doesn't sit and play in it yet, though she can hold herself up.
  • DS loves his already

  • We had one for DS but he had bad reflux and it made him spit up like crazy - I guess he was a little too upright/compressed in there. Anyway I sold it. This LO does not have reflux but I don't plan to get another one.

  • I have one from DS but haven't used it for LO yet. He's only 2.5 months so we're not quite there yet. I bought one used for DS and for the number of times he used it in glad I didn't pay full price.

  • LO is 2.5 months and I just put her in it for the first time this morning. She liked it and did great with her head/neck but I only kept her in it for about 7 minutes. We will try again tomorrow!

  • DH wanted to get one, but I just don't see spending $40 for something that we'd probably hardly use.

  • Ours was a hand me down and it's been one of her fav things. She loves to sit up and look around so we sit her in it a couple times a day for about 10-15 min. She would sit in it all day if I let her. She's all about sitting up recently.
  • We use ours and have been for about a month but DS was early, so he's older (4.5 months).  He loves it and so did my older son.

We have the fisher price frog chair I think it's called sit me up!! My son loves it he hates the bumbo but loves this chair!!
  • I bought one for my DD when she was around 4 months old. I bought it at a consignment shop for $20 including a tray. We have not used it yet because my DS is only 3 months old tomorrow.

I cannot believe we are talking about Bumbos! I feel like it was just yesterday when we were all reading birth stories. Time is going by so fast!

  • I have a mega seat, Ryver sits in it occasionally with no problems.
  • Someone gave us a hand-me-down Bumbo. I wasn't planning on using it because they seemed kind of silly/ergonomically weird/pointless. This thread is making me want to dig it out of the closet and give it a try.

This is what I'll probably get in a few weeks too. The bumbo is more expensive and the summer infant seat seems more fun.

Ours was a hand me down so it is at least 5 years old
  • @jenskurn That is an adorable pic!!

DS loves his bumbo but only for a few minutes at a time.
  • Dont have one but tried my sisters. She is still not quite able to hold her head so we may try it again later on.

  • Bought one off of a resale site for $10. When LO is about 4.5mos we will use it at Grandma's house. We have a booster by Ingenuity for our house. It has removable foam insert, a tray that detaches from seat and store in the bottom AND it can attach to a chair as a small toddler booster. So cool.
  • Sooo...not to be a downer but I read that these kinds of seats are bad for baby's spine, inhibit them from learning to sit independently, etc. (See link.)

Anyone else putting stock in this idea or am I being an uptight geriatric parent? A friend gave us a hand-me-down Bumbo and I was planning to leave it in the basement.

There was an issue with kids flipping them and getting skull fractures. There was a recall and seat belts added, and while I don't see how seat belts fixed it, they must have - I can't believe they'd still be on the market otherwise. Maybe they can't move enough to build momentum for a flip while strapped in? Or maybe the injuries were more falling out after the flip?
Yes, sadly, this has happened, and I have heard about it. But I don't think parents/caregivers should leave a baby unattended while sitting in the Bumbo. That's probably why those incidents happened. I'm sure if the parents would have known this was a possibility, they would've never walked away, even if only for a few moments.

I have one, but haven't used yet because she's only 9wks. I probably will use it when she's older as a temporary place to set her so I can use 2 hands :)

She thinks it's great. I figure it's 'tummy time lite' since she holds her head, but isn't having to arch her back up also. And I supervise it like tummy time. I only use it on a carpet, so if by some miracle she had the strength to tip it over and I didn't catch her, it's a softer landing. I think the kids who got hurt were sitting in them on tables and counters...

I think people were also placing them on tables and surfaces that were above the floor. So they weren't just falling a few inches, they were falling several feet.

Yeah I saw a post about bumbo's on some other board (maybe 3-6 month board?) yesterday also. The most important fix bumbo made, in my opinion at least, was that they changed the picture on the box (they probably put warnings in the manual also, I don't know cause I never bought one). But the box used to have a picture of a baby in a bumbo that was sitting on a table.

I voted don't have one don't care, b/c I don't think they are baby killers or anything if they aren't on an elevated surface, but if I did have one I wouldn't use it like a bouncy seat or swing where a child can be put for 10 minutes while you step away to do something real quick.

I'd probably sit next to my kid, just because I thought the issue they had were with kids falling over in the seat (as in bringing the seat over with them), so I don't see how a seat belt fixes that (although, again, I haven't used one). Not putting them on an elevated surface keeps your kid from probably cracking their skull,  but I wouldn't think it would necessarily keep them from toppling.

  • My friends kids loved their bumbo seats. But she said the way the leg notches are designed made them a right fit even when they were only 4 months old and they grew out of them really fast. We have bought a Mamas and Papas Snug chair which is similar but has roomier leg bits and should last longer and so comes with toys on the removable tray for them to play with.
  • Our neighbour lent us hers as her lo is too chubby to use it! My guy likes it. He hangs out and watches me prep dinner or eat, etc. I don't think I would ever buy one though. Not worth the $$, IMO.
