3rd Trimester

3rd trimester ultrasound - growing too fast?

Does everyone get one of these? I'm supposed to have one in two weeks. My doc said that she wants me to get one because my tummy has grown really fast. ?And she says that could be due to a number of factors, like a lot of ambiotic fluid. ?My theory is that he's going to be a giant like all the rest of the men in my family haha. She measured my belly and all that. ?Anyone else have a similar experience? ?Is it possible for the baby to grew too fast? She told me that he's the reason for my weight gain, that's its all in my belly...and not actually me - which is good news I guess. ?But I really don't know what to make of this whole "your belly grew very quickly" thing. I guess I'll know in two weeks though, but until then what do you guys think?

  • I am having a growth ultrasound in a week because baby boy is measuring over 2 weeks ahead and so am I...not everyone has an ultrasound in the third tri...it really just depeneds on the situation.

  • Maybe you are just having a big baby.  At this point in pregnancy fetuses grow at different rates.
  • I'm measuring big too.....I had an u/s Monday and she is in the 84th percentile for her weight.....which is a little on the big side for 33 weeks.  They probably just want an idea of how big the baby and your fluid levels so they can keep a watch on it.
  • I had a growth ultrasound yesterday to see how big my little guy is. My OB had a similar reaction at my last appointment when he measured my belly. I've measured big all along so I really wasn't all that surprised. Anyway, my fluid levels look great, he is just a big boy. I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Did you have your GD test yet? Everyone asks if I have GD when they see how big my baby is. I don't, just growing a big boy. My DH was almost 11 lbs at birth, so were all of his siblings.
  • I had a growth u/s at 35 weeks b/c I was measuring a few weeks ahead at the 20 week u/s.  My doc just wanted to get an idea of how big the baby was.

  • I had one around 28 weeks because they said i was measuring big when they measured me externally, but DD was only 47th percentile when they did the u/s. At the time i was measuring 2 weeks ahead, now I am measuring 3 weeks ahead, so they will due another u/s at 38 weeks just to get a final estimate. its not necessarily something to worry about. External measurements are far from scientific. measuring big or ahead could mean the baby is long, the baby is chubby, excess amniotic fluid, or a little extra chub in the belly area.

I just has my GD today. Are GD?positive?babies larger? I've never heard that. ?

  • I've had 3 growth U/S in 3rd tri because of GD- it does make the baby larger sometimes even with good sugar control! And their shoulders can be disproportionately larger than their heads so they get stuck!

Baby has been in the 90th percentile since the first u/s at 34 weeks- now he is 9lb 4oz as of yesterday! So I'm getting a scheduled c/s on Monday- big baby, small GD mama! LOL!

Yes, babies born to moms who have GD tend to be on the larger side.

  • Is GD genetic? or is it just random?
  • GD tends to be randon, but there is an increased liklihood of having it if there is a family history of diabetes. But not necessarily. there is a huge family history of diabetes in my family, and mom had GD, but i don't.

Also, if you do have GD there is a higher liklihood of having diabetes later in life

  • Pretty random, though I think if you have a family history of diabetes you may have a higher risk?! It's totally different than type 1 or 2 diabetes though~ It's just the way your body reacts to baby's hormones and stuff- can't make enough insulin for you and the baby!

  • I had to had a growth u/s because I was measuring small and my little girl was in the 37th percentile, then 4 weeks later they did another u/s and she was in the 21st percentile. My doctor said they only get concerned if the baby is in the top or bottom 10%.
