Sick toddler and impending newborn?

Just as luck would have, DS, who just turned 2 came down with Hand, Foot and Mouth disease last weekend.  I'm not due until the 27th, but I'm freaking out about me getting it and passing it to the baby or the baby getting it when he comes home.  Anyone experiencing any older sibling sicknesses as you were expecting or shortly after baby was born?

I wash my hands like a madwoman when I'm home and go through and disinfect the door handles, etc, where I know DS has been and yesterday I sprayed lysol on the couches and my glider and we have been lysoling his toys at night.

I feel like I'm losing my mind!

  • Sorry your DS is sick! It sounds like you're doing everything you should. Good luck

OB said not much to do about it but just keep hands washed.  DS pedi, who was also my pedi said that almost everyone had HFM when they were younger but he said he would try to remember to pull my chart to double check (my mom couldn't remember).  He said just to wash hands after dirty diapers and in general so that's what I'll keep doing!  It's been almost a week since he started with the symptoms and he cleared him to go back to daycare Friday, so I'm guess we are over the worst of it.  I'm just hyper paranoid I had everything just so ready for the baby and now I'm afraid to even go in the baby's room and have been avoiding DS like the plague.
  • Nothing to add besides seeking peds advice

Not as bad at HFM (which my daycare provider said is going around really badly right now) but I'm still in the hospital with DD and DS has an ear infection waiting for me when I get home :(

And life with more than one kiddo begins....

Hope all goes well and your DS feels better quickly!

Oh no :(  HFM has been horrible, just a forewarning.  Blisters covering his feet, behind his knees, hands, mouth and throat.  He has been up the last 3 nights, just started eating a little today after eating nothing for 3 days.  Oatmeal baths have really helped and the neosporin with pain relief are about the only things that would help his rash.  Good Luck with the ear infection and I hope you are spared from the HFM but my pedi told DH today HFM is a necessary evil and rite of passage for kids :(

For the blisters on the skin (not inside mouth) get tree tea oil you can find it with the vitamins at Walmart & apply it @ 3 times a day by cotton ball. This will clear it up fast (my kids were cleared in less than 5 days) its also an antibacterial, anti fungial and anti septic so it will help prevent spreading. Also if you plan on breast feeding you are building up antibodies now. There is a joke in my house that I can't go into labor without someone being sick (& even with 3 toddlers in the house we are rarely sick), & our newborn never got sick. We also do homebirths so there is no separation. This is also a good reason why you should have the vernix rubbed in & not wiped off or bath the newborn until the sickness passes.
  • My daughter was sick the day we brought this one home from the hospital. We asked their doctor what to do. My mom ended up taking her in to rule out strep. It was something viral, so the doctor said to make her wash her hands a ton and not let her touch or kiss the new baby until she had gone 24 hours without a fever. I wouldn't worry too much at this point since you aren't due until the end of the month, but if it does become an issue your OB or kids' pedi should be able to give you some guidance.

  • Hfm virus can stay around in their poo for a good month, so just keep up the hand washing and hopefully no one else will get it! Gl
  • My sons preschool has had 14 kids out with HFM this week. Luckily they gave me a heads up as soon as the first kid got it and I kept him off school all week. It spreads so quickly. We're in CT where are you?

  • I caught HFM from one of my students in my first tri with DS1. It was painful and a bit scary as it can lead to miscarriage in early pregnancy, but thankfully everything turned out fine. From what I have read, if you catch it now, there is a slight chance you will pass it to the baby but even then they usually only have a mild case of it. FXed for you that your LO will feel better soon and that you and the baby will stay well!

  • I'm with you sister! My DS just started showing signs of HFM! I'm taking him to his Ped this afternoon but I know what it is! It's just added stress when you already are stressed! Good luck! I'm praying it clears fast!
