Tell us about your ideal birth

I do a lot of imagining what this birth will be like. I love visualizing it.   If you could script your birth exactly how you want it to go, what would it be? Be as detailed or as vague as you wish.  Include any or all details that are important to you.

Re: Tell us about your ideal birth

  • In my happy fantasies, I would go into labor at home and labor at home for a while. I would have an intervention-free birth at my hospital. My ideal situation would involve a more mid-wife type practice, but that is not available where I live. Baby would be born in less than 10 hours labor, with no tearing or episiotomy. Breastfeeding would go well right off the bat. Hubby would be with me the whole way.

  • I'm hoping for a much different experience this go round as well.

Ideally, I would like for labor to start at home, to call my doula and have her with me at home for a while, along with my husband.

My parents would head down and either get to the house in time to watch DS or pick him up from my neighbor/friends house if we have to go into the hospital before they can arrive.

I would head to the hospital at or near transition, and labor for only a short time in the hospital, with a calm, respectful staff attending me, bonus if it's one of my preferred midwives is on call at the time.

Push however I feel most comfortable, with no one telling me when to push, and get the baby out in less than an hour, with minimal tearing/no episiotomy/vaccum/etc needed.

Immediate skin to skin, DH getting to do the big "it's a ____!" announcement, and NOT have the placenta yanked out of me like it was last time :/

Feel like a warrior, not be pregnant anymore, have a much easier/shorter recovery this time, enjoy my new baby.

    I can't wait!!!!

  • DD's birth was pretty close to ideal. I would love for everything to go similarly this time. My bag of waters started to leak early in the morning then contractions started ~30 minutes later. I went to the hospital and labored there all day. They checked me at ~6:30pm and my bag of waters broke then. I struggled through transition, then pushed for less than 45 minutes. DD was born at 8:15pm. I intended to push with a squat bar but was too shaky and tired at that point to support myself so ended up on my side with my doula and my nurse supporting my legs. I also ended up with a second degree tear but it healed fine.
  • Hospital, drugs, healthy baby. LOL. In reality get to the hospital as soon as possible where I'm more comfortable with medical staff around me. Epidural right away and having a staff that listens and believes me when I say I am a red head and metabolize pain meds WAY faster than a normal person. Hanging out with my H watching movies or Dr. who until it's time to push. Minimal to no tearing, healthy baby, and H sees nothing below the waist!
At the end of the day as long as it's a healthy baby I'll be happy!

  • Fairly similar to my last birth. I want to labor at home as long as possible (preferably with my doula there this time), head to the hospital near transition, not get held up in triage this time, give birth naturally without oxygen, without baby struggling, without forceps and without a 3rd degree tear. Immediate skin to skin with baby again, with DH cutting the cord and breastfeeding going well.

I will not go into labor before my RCS.  I will walk into the hospital at 8:30am, get prepped in triage by a nurse who does not take 50 tries to start my IV, waltz myself down to the OR, leap gracefully onto the table, spinal/catheter, DH does not pass out when walking into the room, and baby is out and tubes are tied.  I am not knocked out in recovery for 3 hours like last time and get to bond with LO in the recovery room and am fully conscious the entire time.  I would actually like some memories of the first day this time around.

In my ideal situation there is no Pitocin, no mag drip, and no nurses who put me off to do anything until the shift change.  I'd also hope to actually see the LC before being discharged which didn't happen last time either.

  • Similar to when I had DS. Water breaks at home before contractions start so that way there is no guessing with contractions if this "could be it". From the time my water broke and I started pushing, it was 7 hours last time. That was fine for me and it have me enough time to get to hospital and checked in with getting an epi. It didn't seem to long. I pushed for 30 mins so anything less than that is great! I would like minor tearing if at all, skin to skin, and to breastfeed right away.

As some of the PPs have stated, I would be happy if my labor this time is similar to my labor with DS.

Waters broke around 3PM, headed to the doctor's office for them to confirm (this part seemed silly to me because there was no way it wasn't my waters).  The office they sent me to was attached to the hospital I was delivering at so they just wheeled me over to L&D.  They hooked my up to the monitors and IV (I was GBS+ so I needed antibiotics) and I wasn't feeling contractions until probably 7-8PM.  Despite not feeling the contractions, the monitors showed that I was having regular contractions and I was dilating.

Once I started feeling contractions, they weren't painful just made me feel like I had to poop, which made me tense up with every contraction.  My doctor felt like I was stalling and wanted to start pitocin.  I was slightly concerned that if they started pitocin I would progress quickly and would miss my opportunity to get an epidural, so I requested to get the epidural, which would allow me to relax.  I was hoping being able to relax would allow my body to continue to progress without the pitocin, which it did.  By 11/12PM, I was ready to push.

DS was born at 12:49AM.  I only had one small tear.  I felt great afterwards.

  • I would love to repeat my second birth, minus the induction. I would love to actually go into labor naturally. I would like for my water to break naturally and for labor not to stall.

Honestly, my second delivery was ideal (with the exception of being induced, but even that want awful). I just want that again.

  • My ideal would be a close match to my first birth. I'd be alone to allow labor to proceed on it's own without interacting with anyone. I'd deliver on my own. The only thing I'd change from my first is that it would be my midwife and DH that arrived a few minutes after birth.  I'd like the help with the placenta so I don't bleed as much and therefore won't be as wiped out afterward.

As long as I can stay internally focused, my labor doesn't hurt. When I have to interact with other people I loose that connection to knowing what to do and how to do it and things get painful quickly. I won't purposely plan an unassisted birth as I'm aware of the risks and want the external help if necessary...but in an ideal situation the baby and I would be alone to listen to each other and complete the complex dance without interference...even the most well meaning of help is an interference for me.

  • - Water break in the middle of the night when I get up to pee so I don't mess my sheets up
    - Labor at home while, take a bath, get on the ball, be deeply massaged by H for a while ;)
    - Go to the hospital with contractions 5 mins apart
    - Get some drugs, walk around, get settled in
    - Get the epidural after progressing quickly
    - 3 pushes, with no tears, no episiotomy, and no hemorrhoids

Sounds pretty perfect to me! It will probably go completely opposite of this and I'm also okay with that.

  • Get baby out safe. Oh and have my water break outside the hospital in a most dramatic fashion :)

  • I'd like my contractions to start during the day if they're manageable, or right after I put DD to bed if they're going to be intense from the start. Last time, it took 40 hours, but the first 24 hours of contractions were very manageable. I would like to labor at home as long as I feel comfortable and then head to the hospital. Hopefully, I could give birth with DH at my side while DD was still sleeping.

During labor, I want H with me and no one else. If I can, I want to avoid any pain medicine and be able to walk around as much as I want. I hope I can stay sufficiently focused during the pushing phase to do my breathing exercices. I want to push when I feel like pushing, and not when I'm told to push. If the pushing part could go as well as it did with DD, I would be very happy.

I'm obviously hoping to avoid tearing, but I teared last time and recuperated just fine. I also want skin-to-skin with my baby as soon as he gets here, and if we could delay cord clamping, that would make me happy.

  • I don't have many expectations other than for a vaginal birth, I'd like to push baby out rather quickly, him being healthy and me having very little to no tear!

As for a c-section, I'd just wish for a quick recovery.

  • Ideally? I will get a text message from the baby when it's 100% ready to come out. If it's going past my due date, I will get a text on my due date with an ETA. We'll go to the hospital, check in, and I'll lounge in the bed while they bring me whatever meal is up next for the day. Then the midwife/ob will come in, painless magic will happen, and my baby will be placed on my chest. Since it's all magical and painless, it will be no problem having DS stay in the room with me and DH the whole time. DH will get a good amount of bonding time, then take DS home. I will stay for 2 days of blissful meals served in bed, nurses to help out, and a newborn who sleeps anytime it's not eating with a perfect latch from the get go.

Really? My induction wasn't so bad last time, I wouldn't mind doing that again. Although going into labor on my own and not having pitocin contractions would be nice.

  • I work on manifesting this daily :)

What I usually write down is: I go into labor on my own at the perfect time. I have a quick, safe, easy, vaginal, low-intervention delivery with little to no tearing and no episiotomy, and a perfectly healthy baby. I'm able to breastfeed easily and consistently. There is no drama between my husband and my mother.
