Middle of the night snack ideas!

All of the sudden I have started waking up in the middle of the night starving! And if I don't eat I can't fall back asleep!

What are some good middle of the night snacks you ladies eat?

I am not a big snacker in my nonpregnant life so I feel kind of lost when I am standing in the dark kitchen! Help!

  • Before I go to bed I usually have a snack andgo with something small like cherries or a cut up cucumber

  • I second the glass of milk and your best bet to curb the hunger is something with protein, so peanut butter or a cheese stick or some nuts
  • Peanut butter sandwich or a bowl of cereal.

  • Milk always. I mean right now I have a beautiful tres leches cake I'm thinking about digging into.... But usually I just have milk.

  • Probably not the healthiest option, but I always go for a bowl of Special K...it's better than my fruit loops craving that I had a few months back!

  • I had this problem with my last pregnancy. I kept granola bars on my night stand. Mostly because I didn't want to get out of bed and go downstairs to eat. I would just eat a bar and fall back asleep. My husband didn't appreciate waking up to me unwrapping said bars but whatever! Of course all the other suggestions are much healthier but I was way to lazy to get up and prepare snacks in the middle of the night.

    I just smashed a bowl of Rice Krispies with bananas...so that's my current recommendation.

  • String cheese, banana...my go-to usually are grapes. Stick with something semi healthy though...you'll feel better about it in the morning!
  • I occasionally wake about 2/3a feeling starving and a stock of string cheese and glass of water usually do the trick.

    I'm with you @shauna813, I never have midnight hunger pangs or really even cravings very often. A higher fat content in your diet will keep you feeling full and satisfied longer (making sure they're healthy fats - think saturated over PUFA) along with fewer carbs. Carbs release insulin, insulin makes blood sugar crash, blood sugar crash makes you hungry. Try whole eggs, avocado (for dessert, avocado chocolate pudding is heavenly!), some sliced meat rolled up with cheese (nuke it if you're worried about listeria), a spoonful of PB or almond butter by itself, I've even heard people say that a spoonful of coconut oil is very satisfying. Try it before bed and you may not wake up hungry at all.

    Handful of unsalted almonds or if that doesn't do it, a cup of unsweetened applesauce. Both are things that won't turn to bad things if you go back to bed right away. I keep a can of almonds in my bedside drawer and if I wake up hungry, grab a handful, sleepily chew them and then I can fall asleep sooo much better.

    LOL, then enjoy your cake!! :-) Cake is awesome at midnight, not gonna lie or deny it.

    I was just listing ways to not have to deal with it if sleep is the bigger draw.
  • I usually go for 5-8 triscuits or some Chex Mix. I feel like I should throw some pb or string cheese into the mix from now on, though.






  • I always grab LF string cheese when I am super hungry, but just need something quick that will hold me over. It helps a lot!

     

     

     

  • I like string cheese or mini babybel cheese rounds. Graham crackers and milk is another go-to recently.

  • Mini babybel cheese is my midnight lover, that with grapes and crackers.

    Aside from that, I usually go for PB on toast with a glass of milk.

  • For real, this thread makes me feel guilty about my poor habits.. almost ;-)

    I keep a bag of pretzel nubs in my room... I like the salty/crunchy ness.. but, sucks to get crumbs in bed!! Last night I had a kiwi and a chocolate donut at 3am.. the night before I did greek yogurt.. last week I microwaved some pizza bite things ;-)

  • Thanks for all the ideas! I feel like they are all pretty so easy and I don't know why I couldn't think of them myself! Lol. I love the idea of apples and peanut butter!

    I have been eating so poorly lately that when I had broccoli at dinner yesterday my husband kept watching me eat and then yelled at my belly "Baby, what you may be tasting is a vegetable! Don't be scared, it is actually good for you!"

  • It's insanely hot in our bedroom, and I am an oven.. so I have been midnight snacking all of my Outshine fruit bars.. crap the coconut ones are my version of heaven. I also have been known to sneak beef jerky and almonds.. I stopped keeping cake and cookies around.. it was getting dangerous... but as I say that I am thinking about going to Dairy Queen... and that's probably a bad idea too.
