Red rash around nipples?

I started getting a red rash around my nipples last week. I saw an LC who didn't think it looked like thrush and I have no other signs to indicate it might be that. Also DD has no white spots.

I have been leaning toward an irritation from the nursing pads. I stopped using the disposable ones but it seems to have gotten worse. I keep putting lanolin on them but the skin is very tender to the touch and flaky, if that makes sense.

I plan to call my OB tomorrow just to see. Any other suggestions? I also wonder if it is heat related. Either way it is driving me crazy!

  • I've been using both the Medela and MotherLove.

I may also try to see another LC in person to see if they know what it might be. I could stop using the Medela stuff in the meantime.

  • Did you find a solution for this? I have this exact problem...it's only on one of my nipples. I was even treated for a yeast infection just in case, but that did not help.
  • have you tried coconut oil? supposedly it's an antimicrobial as well as an antifungal, and it's also a great moisturizer.
