WWYD- Work Related

So I am currently a research chemist.  I just got a promotion in may and my direct boss is working really hard to try and get me promoted again this upcoming year.  He has been seeking out additional development opportunities for me and I am currently working on transitioning to a new role with a lot more responsibility.  My manager (my boss's boss) just called me and asked me if I wanted to go to development training in Sept.  It is usually only available for people who are 3 levels higher than me but I got nominated because apparently they think I am awesome.  So my hang up is it is a week away from Sawyer.  It is also the Sunday we get back from our week vacation in North Carolina.  So what do you think.  Should I go even though I will miss Sawyer tremendously?  Or should I not go and stay home.  I am seriously conflicted and my manager needs an answer tomorrow!  HELP!

  • In your position, I would probably go. That said, I have yet to be away from Norah overnight even one night and have only been away from my son (4) a handful of times. It will be hard, but Skype/FaceTime is your friend!

  • I also have mama guilt over him being in daycare longer while I am gone.  Typically DH drops him off at 9 before work and I pick him up at 3:30 after work.  When I am gone he would be there from 9 until 5:30 when DH gets done.  I know for my career I should go but I feel guilty doing that. First world problems.

  • I also vote go! It sounds like your are headed to bigger things at work and you might regret turning it down later.  He will have a blast at daycare and the week will be over before you know it!

  • Go! It'll be hard, but I don't feel like it will reflect well on you to turn down such a good opportunity and vote of confidence in your abilities by your bosses. I could be talking out of my ass here, but as a woman in science, do you feel you have to work twice as hard to get ahead? I know a few female scientists myself (and work at an engineering company as an admin professional, so this doesn't come from nowhere), and my experience has been that falling back professionally to care for your family has unfair and harsh consequences for women.

Congratulations, lady, way to kick ass!

  • Go, if the promotion is what you want. And congrats on being awesome at your job :)
The week away will be hard, but it'll be ok.
  • Thanks ladies! DH basically laughed when I asked what he thought and said of course I should go.

@Ziegeficker‌ it is difficult to move up especially without a PhD. I have a masters but apparently it doesn't count for much. My company is currently trying to change that though but since we are so big it will take a while. I have gotten extremely lucky so far with awesome bosses though.

  • Go lady go. It will be tough but you can,do this. I,luuvv hearing stories like this.

I'd say go, BUT prepare Sawyer with lots of talking before.

I just went away for a conference and T was fine, and had a great time without me, BUT she was really unsettled and clingy when I got home, and it's taken a while for her to settle down.

Slightly different, because I'm mostly at home with her, so 3.5 days was a long time for us, but if it will upset your routine, you need to give the little guy lots of warning and notice. It's hard for them to understand time: so when Mommy goes to gym and is coming home "soon" or Mommy goes out of town for a week and is coming home "soon", he needs to be helped to understand that they are different soons, but the main thing is that MOMMY IS COMING HOME!

It shouldn't change his routine all that much he will just be at daycare a couple hours longer 3 days out of the week since DH works from home the following 2 days.  One of those days we are going to see if my mom can come and spend the day with him so it is only 2 long days.

I think I just need to suck it up and go.  It is for the better of all of us right?  Thanks for the reassurance.

In the middle of my dilemma this happened last night!

We lost power last night because a tree fell on the neighbors house.  Everyone is okay but it was totally scary!

  • Yes go! I think you'll enjoy it more than you realize now (personally and professionally) and if you don't go, you'll really piss off your direct boss who has been using his professional capital to get you promoted.

... and you won't be around in the mornings or evenings. Definitely go, but don't underestimate the effect it will have on your LO.
