July 2014 Moms

Team green turned blue!! Sorry it's long!! (Tiffles)

My little man made his entrance into the world on July 7, 2014!
It started on Friday July 4th with a regular checkup at 40 weeks and 4 days! The week before, NOTHING was happening! I was 0 cms, and still very thick! So discouraging! I was induced with DD, so I kind of figured that's where this one was heading too! This checkup however, I was finally 1 cm, meaning that they were finally able to do a membrane sweep!! Yay!! With fingers crossed, I left the office. That night, nothing! The next morning, nothing!! Then finally that evening, Saturday July 5, I started having some minor contractions, at DD's friends, birthday party! I kind of thought it was just Braxton Hicks again, as the previous week, I had false labor for 3 days! They didn't have any pattern or anything, and weren't actually overly painful, but I joked with some of the other moms there, that if I wasn't at the next birthday party the next day, I was in the hospital!! That night I still had some contractions through the night, the same as the false labor I had the week before, so sleep was very limited.
The next morning, they were still there, but slightly more painful. I joked to hubby that if this was like last week again, and all for nothing, I'd quit!! ;) That afternoon, they stayed pretty strong, so I decided that we should go for a nice long walk. We walked for about 2.5 kilometers, in the crazy heat, trying to push through each contraction. We headed home to take a break. After a break, we went for another walk around, and they started getting a little more painful. Still anywhere from 4-10 minutes when moving, but 10-20 minutes when sitting and only up to 35 seconds long. Then on the way home from our walk around a car dealership, they got really strong! They slowed down once again, as we headed home. After supper, I called the health care question line, and asked them what to do. I paced the whole time I was on the phone! Then halfway through the call, the nurse said, "Ok so we've been on the phone for 6 minutes, and you've had 3 contractions already! They're 2 minutes apart! But they're still only 35-45 seconds long." We were both confused, as the rule of thumb says they should last at least 45-60 seconds long. She conferred with another nurse, and suggested that I take my time and make my way to the hospital within the next four hours. Hubby cleaned up some things around the house, while I got DD in bed. (The in laws are visiting, so we were covered!) Then I had a craving for ice cream, so we stopped at Mcdonalds and had Mcflurries in the parking lot!! :)  As we finished our ice cream, I was grabbing at the handle during each contraction, and hubby figured we had better go. We got to the hospital at around 11pm, and were the only people there! We got a room, and got checked and holy cow I was almost 5 cms!! They didn't admit me right then, but told me to hang out and walk around, as with second babies, you usually progressed pretty quick. So we walked the halls, and at about 11:45 they started to hurt...bad! So off to the shower I go! After about 15 minutes in the shower, I felt quite a bit of mucus running down my legs. I thought maybe my water had broke. The contractions started getting even more painful, and I mentioned to the nurse that the pressure in my bum was getting stronger. We figured I had better get out and get checked. This was at 12am. 9 cms! Holy crap! She suggested that maybe I shouldn't get back in the shower! So I had one more contraction on the bed, and definitely felt my water break! Then pain! Oh my God! With each contraction that followed, I had to keep repeating "Don't push, don't push, don't push!!!" The nurse kept telling me not to push, and then 10 minutes later, the midwife shows up! "You do, whatever feels natural!" So push I did! 10 minutes later, and a lot of "It burns! It burns!" Out comes a head! We got a shoulder stuck, but it worked out ok, and we got it out!! I sat there looking at hubby and said "Well what is it?!?!" Then he started crying and told me we had a boy!!! Declan Nicholas Rose, was born at 12:23 am, weighing 8lbs, 5oz, and 21 1/2 inches long!
Considering I was thinking about not going to the hospital, it was just craziness that I had him an hour and 23 minutes after I got to the hospital! Natural labor was definitely better than being induced!
He latched on and started feeding about an hour after he arrived, and is breastfeeding like a champ!!! I ended up with a 2nd degree tear, which was waaay better than with DD!!
We are all doing fantastic!!!
