still gassy on gentlease?

I'll try to make this simple...

Week 1: mostly breastfed and supplemented with gentlease
Weeks 2-3: exclusively on gentlease
Week 3: tried to transition to enfamil infant, very gassy baby, switched back to gentlease
Week 3.5-5.5: exclusively on gentlease

Until we tried to switch formulas, she wasn't very gassy and was never fussy. Since we switched back to gentlease, she's very gassy, fussy and her poop is solid. She's been back on it for two weeks, so I would think any transition period would be over.

Ideas? Does she need something even gentler? IS there anything gentler?

We switched from similac advance to similac sensitive to enfamil gentleease to now enfamil reguline. She was very constipated on the similac sensitive, slight better on gentleease but the reguline has been the only one that she has normal poops with.

  • Are you shaking the bottles to mix them? If so, and your LO is drinking foam, then it doesn't matter what formula you use. Have you tried mixing the bottles with a spoon or making up a whole day's worth of formula ahead of time and storing it in the fridge so the bubbles cam dissipate and the particles can soften and incorporate?

  • We tried regular Enfamil first, too gassy and constipated. Then Similac Sensitive, too gassy and constipated. Then Enfamil Nutramigen, pooped too much with bloody stools. Then Similac Alimentum, still gassy and spit up a lot. Am now trying Gerber Good Start Soothe. It seems to be a fit! I've heard great things about this formula and it's the best so far. Regular poops and far less gassy. I def love this over Enfamil or Similac.
  • @jenb_99‌ we make a pitcher at a time, so no bubbles there. I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow. It's been too long for her to have these symptoms. I'm just confused bc this formula was fine the first time she was on it. Tonight she's SUPER gassy... poor thing

  • Right now I have my lo on the meijer brand of enfamil AR for reflux, along with zantac twice a day and that seems to help with her fussiness and gas. For those of you that mix up a whole days worth of formula, how do you warm it when baby is hungry? I heard not to use a microwave and dont want to buy a bottle warmer. Any ideas?
  • @bridetobe9132013 You could do it the old-fashioned way and set the bottle in a pan of water that was heated on the stove. Or you could use a mug of hot water out of a coffee pot or electric kettle.

I've also heard of people using mini Crock-Pots and always keeping them on and filled with water to set bottles in. I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be with that option, though.

I don't know if cost is a factor in your decision not to buy a bottle warmer, but there are a few good ones under $20. This First Years one actually works really well.

I just put warm water in a cup and put the bottle in for a short time to take the chill off. Some formulas will tell you not to warm because of the probiotics so read the can.

@artroyer‌, have you tried gas drops or gripe water? Neither worked for us but works for other people. I also do exercises...I bend her legs and do a circle clockwise towards her chest. Works most of the time! My baby is VERY gassy.

You should also try the Gerber Good Start Soothe. I had many people tell me their baby was horribly gassy on Similac or Enfamil but this worked great for them. So far, it's the best for us!
  • Thanks for the suggestions! :)
  • @antidote thank you for the link! I was planning to get the baby brezza but I will look into this one :)
  • Wait... stupid phone lol that was for @anniemore‌

Our pedi had us switch to Enfamil Reguline because our LO was so constipated on Gerber good start gentle. It's worked really well for her -- she now has 1-2 poos a day on the Reguline.
  • Both of my girls got too constipated on premie enfamil - probably from the extra iron.  At their 2 month check up, the pediatrician told me that if it appears the gas is making them hurt or they look uncomfortable to put probiotics in their bottles once/day.  My girls are still gassy but it doesn't appear it hurts them (we use Similac Advance).

  • We started on enfamil newborn and I thought baby was extra gassy so it wouldn't hurt to go to enfamil gentlease. Boy was I wrong! We had two days of hell!! LO apparently didn't like the tast of the gentlease... He would eat about 2 ozs (he was eating a good 5 ozs at that point on the newborn) and just freak out and quit eating. And obviously was starving only hour or so later. And baby was super gassy even on gentlease. We switched back to the regular enfamil newborn and it was almost immediate end to the baby craziness!

  • We had the same problem on gentlease. We switched to gerber sensitive and he likes it a lot better. Not to mention have you smelled gentlease? It's smells awful I wouldn't want to drink it either. Gerber doesn't have a smell really so for me it makes me feel better about it as well.
