Breastfeeding

Bottle preference at 8 months

My son is 8 months old (9 next week). We had a lot of struggles with breastfeeding, but we finally got into a grove around 5 months. Now we're having trouble again. He is usually okay at his morning feed and his bedtime feed if he's tired, as well as a middle of the night feed, if any, but the daytime feeds are so rough. He won't latch on for very long, he wiggles around, he makes this angry sound while nursing, and when he pops off he either fusses or screams. I EP for his twin sister so I pump after feeding him and I have noticed a decrease in output, but I still get 2-4 ounces. If the pump can get that, then he should be able to, right? Anyway, my theory is that it's just a slow flow. He gets 1-2 bottles a day in the afternoon and those feeds have no issues. Is there anything I can do? Eventually we both get frustrated and stop, but I'm worried he's not getting enough milk. If he sees his sister's bottle, he gets excited even if he just ate.

Are you using the slow flow bottle nipples? My LC said always stick with the slowest flow and don't change it based on age (since the flow won't ever change to be much faster from the "tap!")

Maybe changing up bottles could help, and my LO was very distracted nursing at that age. I started bringing a small, soft toy with me to nurse and that helps a lot because she focuses on playing with/staring at/turning over the toy in her hands and nurses at the same time. Much less popping off to see what else is going on.

Re: pumping vs feeding, yes, your baby should be getting as much or more from nursing as from the pump. The rule of thumb my LC teaches is that there is 2-3x as much AVAILABLE to the baby than you get from the pump. Does that mean he/she will take that much? Of course not. But if you're pumping 3 oz that means there is 6-9 oz available to the baby, since your breasts are never actually empty.

We do use slow flow nipples but maybe we need another bottle change. I'll also try the small toy during nursing. Thanks!

He's a very active little boy, so maybe that's part of it. But he seems so angry and frustrated when he pops off. Does your little one fuss or cry after her short sessions, @casey78‌ ?

She would fight and squirm to get down the second she was done. If I re offered when she was done, she'd bite.
Ouch! Guess I should be glad he doesn't have teeth yet!
