Bedsharing Issues/DS must be held while he sleeps

For the last month or so we've been bedsharing halfway through the night because DS will wake up in the middle of the night and not go back to sleep until he's in the bed with us. I know we started a terrible habit because neither DH nor I want to bedshare we're just usually so tired it's much easier to bring him into bed with us and fall right back asleep. He started to need to get rocked to sleep at night and for naps and then we put him into his crib and he'll sleep for about 4 hours then cry. When we go in to replace his pacifier he needs to be rocked again back to sleep and the second you try to set him back in his crib he wakes up and cries again. Can anyone help?? He's usually on his hands and knees when I go into his room in the middle of the night so I think he only wakes up because he flipped over.

Sorry this is so long and hopefully it makes sense. Picture for your time :)

Re: Bedsharing Issues/DS must be held while he sleeps

  • This happened to us a while back (maybe a month ago or so) and I felt so terrible because I knew we were starting a bad habit.  Honestly though, I think it was just a growth spurt or a phase because she has gotten better since then.  Sometimes, we still bring her back in bed with us just because it's easier but the NEED for her to be in bed with us has faded.

Can he roll from back to belly and belly to back? Is he teething?

We did this too! You are not alone. We finally had to bit the bullet and sleep train so she would be able to put herself back down in the middle ofthe night.

My husband did a modified "pick up/put down" and Ferber and sge took to it in less than a week. She's been sttn for a couple of weeks with the exception of the other night... I found out in the morning that her first tooth had broken through so she gets a pass on that one!

It's very hard! Don't get down or discouraged! Just come up with a plan both you and your husband can work on together!

@deedee1017 Glad to hear it was just a phase with your LO :) Yes, he can roll both ways now. I don't really see any teeth coming in, but he's drooling a lot and gnawing on everything so maybe?

  • How old is he? Exactly how do you respond when he starts crying? Are you going in right away?
@dknight413 He turned 8 months last Thursday. I go in right away when he lets out the first big wail - if he just wimpers I wait to see if he'll fall back asleep. He's always on his knees so I flip him back to his back and replace his pacifier and shush him. If he keeps crying I pick him up and rock him back to sleep.

@ksimo6 So very glad to hear this! I'm so hesitant to sleep train so I haven't really entertained the idea yet (not sure if I'm strong enough to do it!). What sort of "pick up/put down" did you do? I'd definitely be interested in hearing more :)
