High-Risk Pregnancy

Intro-TTC#2 with Crohns type colitis

We have been TTC #2 for 11 months now. I had a bad flare up at the beginning of the year and have now been put on Imuran. My Gastro tells me that I should wait another 6 months to TTC so that I can go into remission. The gastro referred me to a specialist who works with people with IBD during pre and post pregnancy so Im hoping she will put me on medication that is not class D so that I can work with my OB on the next steps of TTC. It took 5 months to conceive DS and we are so ready for another. I feel frustrated, stuck and impatient. Just wondering what others with Crohns have experienced on their journey to TTC.

Re: Intro-TTC#2 with Crohns type colitis

  • I was on remicaid, 6mp, and lialda when I got pregnant. I was advised to go off 6mp when i began spotting and cramping around 7 weeks. After coming off 6mp i became severely allergic to the remicaid and had to switch to humira. Now i am on lialda and humira and i feel a lot better. I get growth scans of LO every 4-5 weeks and at her last scan she had great fluid levels, weighed in at3 lbs 3 ozs and was moving like a champ.

It's best to get into remission because a flare can be much more detrimental to the baby than any meds your on. Good luck. I don't suggest doing medicine changes while pregnant. It wasn't fun to have to change medicines, humira took forever to get approved for and even now every 3 months i have to go through a new approval.

  • Thanks all! Great info.
  • I have ulcerative colitis, it didn't affect my ability to conceive but I was in remission. During my first pregnancy (and now) I was on my normal meds.  (I take Lialda)  No problems the first time around at all ( I delivered 6+ lb twins at 38 weeks) but I was advised not to breastfeed due to the medication. Good luck to you!!

Thanks again ladies. Another question, which I will be asking the gastro specialist who works with patients with IBD,but did any of you take fertility drugs during the time you were on medications for Crohns or colitis? Since I started taking Lialda in Feb and then was put on Imuran in May I have been symptom free. Just interested to know if an RE or OBGYN will even work with me at this point.... Any experience with this?

Sorry if my train of thought is hard to follow..Thanks again!
  • I conceived my twins via IVF while on Lialda.  And I'm now spontaneously pregnant with no help.... So, yes!  The RE will likely have no problem with the Lialda.

  • I conceived without fertility medicine.

  • I have moderate to severe Chrons and started in a bad flare about a year ago; was on prednisone for 10 months and had to be off of that before ttc; with my first pregnancy I was in remission and on no meds, I'm currently 4 weeks 2 days with my second pregnancy and I am on Remicade 10mg/kg every 5 weeks. My dr told me that there is no increased risk for issues being on remicade!
