Cloth Diapering

The washing machine. Is. Dead.

I'm not around much, so I'm not sure if I still have lurker status, but I just had to pop in and share with everyone the wonderful news about my washing machine....UGH. We're renters, so the landlord will come take a look at it sometime tomorrow. I had *just* washed a load of diapers, thank goodness, so I'm good until Thursday at least, but there's no guarantee that the landlord will be able to fix the problem. And it's not like it's a high priority for him!

SO says this is the universe testing our resolve to CD. I am seriously looking at the downstairs bathtub and thinking "I could hand-wash....right?" Has anyone here ever hand-washed a large number of diapers? I should add that I'm back at work, so while the baby is in daycare, our diaper load is mostly BGEs, both old and new style.

Is it weird that I'm kind of *excited* to try hand-washing, just to see how it compares?

  • This is when a good, old fashioned wash board would come in handy.

Sorry about your problem. Hopefully it'll be fixed before you run out of dipes.

  • Ugh, ladies. You are harshing my buzz!
  • All what you need to do is organize your time. You can also rinse the diapers and leave then in a bouquet with water for wash during the night. And to get rid of all the water from the insert you can use a salad spinner. It was someone here a long time ago, the has a blog. She shows on her blog how to do a hand wash. I'm no so sure but her blog is the wildaccidentalflower or the accidental wild flower. Something like that. Good luck

  • Also check the fine print of your lease.  You might be able to hurry along your landlord to get the machine fixed depending on what your lease stipulates.
  • So far in my Google searching on "hand washing AIO cloth diapers" I have found a number of blog articles indicating that the best way to agitate dirty diapers is to stomp/run in place on them in a bucket of soapy water, a la "I Love Lucy" and the grapes. 5 minute intervals for 25 minutes, one blog says. So I can also save money on my gym membership, apparently.

Or a plunger with holes drilled in-I wouldn't want to step on my diapers

  • Now I am laughing at the thought of someone running on their diapers and then slipping and falling into the water. =))
  • Two words.  Wonder Wash.

  • Our washing machine was broken for 3 weeks by the time we had the service man out, parts ordered/delivered and machine repaired. (Should've been 2 weeks but one of the guys was sick when it was a 2 man job). It sucked. We crossed to the disposables dark side because we were under mountains of laundry.
I had a friend who successfully used we bathtub and washed pockets for a year before finally moving to another apartment and had laundry in the unit so it can be done. Just wasn't feasible with chasing my 2 and working. Hope yours is repaired faster than ours was!

I think during the f&hwc someone posted about slipping while running/stomping on the diapers in the tub so it has/does happen. Methinks a trip to the ER would totally cancel out any savings from using that method.

  • Make a camp style washer. Bucket and plunger. It cost $11. You have to do small loads, but I successful washed my ON S'bish without any problems. I would probably only put 5 or so AIOs in at once.

  • Drilling holes in the plunger is *genius*, thanks for that idea @Mandmeesh ! I think bucket and plunger sounds the safest, I'm not super coordinated as it is so I don't like my odds of keeping my balance while running on dirty wet diapers. I need to work my upper body anyway!

The landlord is coming by to look at the washer today, fingers crossed!
