6 weeks old and EBF question

My LO still wakes up every 1.5 to 3 hours to eat. For other moms in the same age range and breastfeeding, how do you compare?

I don't mind his feeding schedule, but with this many feedings, I'm finding it hard to have him get the recommended hours of sleep.

Just when I start feeling good about things, I read something else and my confidence gets shaken.

Re: 6 weeks old and EBF question

  • Yep same here. Ds is 9 weeks. We get the odd 4 hour at night.

  • @QOTR‌ I know how you feel. Ds sleeps like crap during the day and I keep worrying I'm doing something wrong. Is it too much light? Not enough white noise? My own lack of patience? Shouldn't we be on a pattern by bow?

I'm slowly accepting this is just the way ds us and it will work itself out. It always does. As dh says you can force them yo eat or sleep. As a tot teacher I know that too well. And it always works out with them.

We will get there. I promise. Otherwise we can drown Ourselves in brownies.
  • Yup 9 wks here and still 3-4 hrs between BM feedings. We've gotten a couple 5 hr stretches at night but only when we've been really busy during the day with her.
You are not alone. I don't think they last longer until about 3 months.

So how many total hours of sleep per day are they getting? I've only been tracking total hours the last week or so, but my guy gets around 12 or 13 most days. He did get 15.5 yesterday, but he's not on track to hit that today.

  • About 9 at night. And maybe 5 during the day. So 14 total. I guess not bad. But getting that 5 is pulling teeth.

  • 6.5 weeks here. When things are going well, we get 4-5 hrs between the bedtime feeding and the first MOTN feed. Then it decreases from there, 2-3 hrs. Lately, though, it's been 1.5-2 and lots of fussing. That 6 week growth spurt hit a few days late! During the day, it depends on how she naps. Anywhere from 1.5 to 4 hrs.

  • 6wks. Feeds every 1-3 hrs. I also had the same concern
  • My LO had her 2month checkup today and I asked about sleep because I also don't think she's getting enough to add up to 15.5 (not even sure about 12 - I suck at keeping track of time) and posts here and othet stuff out there to read were stressing me out about that. Anyway the nurse-practitioner was not worried about it at all and said it's really normal for EBF babies to just take cat naps, etc. And did not seem to feel there was a specific target for total sleep hours. She also sorta tried to recommend sleep training with CIO when I said DD usually wakes up when I try to put her down so won't take much of a daytime nap except on me. But then she right away said she probably wouldn't be able to do it so that was kinda funny.

Anyway ... my point was at least one medical person said don't stress about total sleep amounts.

Though even if it's Ok for baby those short stretches at night must suck for you. Mine was like that last night but usually has one 3-5 hour stretch and did at 6 weeks too. It's the daytime that's all catnaps with me serving as baby furniture.

  • DS JUST started spacing out daytime feedings.  He can now go 2.5-3 hrs during the day instead of 1.5-2.  Things constantly change with newborns!

  • Our first stretch at night, LO goes anywhere from 4-6 hours. Then it is every 2-3.
  • 8 weeks here. My guy eats every 3 hours during the day with an am and afternoon nap of about 2 hours each. He goes down for bed at 10, eats between 3-4 and again between 6-8. Then we start our day.

Six weeks one day. When things were "good" our first night stretch was three hours then one or two hour stretches from there. Now things are bad (I wish I could confidently claim growth spurt but I've been saying that since three weeks and am starting to doubt it as a legitimate excuse) and we get one hout stretch if lucky and the rest of the night in my armpit.

  • Flipped here. DD, 7 wks tmo, sleeps 4-5 hrs at night and then nurses every 1-2 hrs all day. I love the nighttime rest, but my toddler is frustrated that I'm attached to the baby all day and he's starting to act out.

  • I get Pierson to sleep longer by skipping in an extra feeding prior to bed of about 2 oz of pumped milk. I pump twice a day- stash one pump and use the other pump to give at night. I breastfeed at 7, give a bottle if pumped milk at 8:30, then nurse to sleep at 10. He sleeps until 3/4.
