Would you e-mail? Re: Carseat use

DS1's school is a private school for special needs.  They send a back to school letter home (school year starts in July)  and one thing is about securing children safely in the car and bus.

It has a section that says "Children over 1 year old and between 20-40lbs   -Should ride in the car seat facing the front of the car, van, or truck"

Would you e-mail the nurse asking to revise the list?  I already had educated friends that had their kids in incorrect carseats so I can imagine this is some of the only information people are seeing on car seat usage.

  • I would absolutely speak up. Very few people understand how important RFing is and if a school for special needs children is giving such dated advice it will likely be treated as permission to turn a child who is way too young.

I would simply link the AAP recommendations. Since that's the accepted medical authority they will likely be the one a nurse would listen to. Their current recommendation is not to turn before 2, but also to keep the child RF as long as they can safely fit in the seat, so it's a good recommendation.

  • I would probably email and site your person concern for your child and link the info as your reason. I'd also request your child remain rear facing.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

This is why I do ALL the transportation.  I refuse to let the school district bus him.

  • In this case I'd at least send the AAP recommendations to RF as long as possible (i.e. revise the statement to be more in line with AAP), especially for some special needs individuals - even if by law it only needs to be a year.

  • Definitely, the school should be encouraging the safest method possible, and that sure isn't it!
