Pumping/breastfeeding question

With DS I started pumping around 4 weeks in anticipation for going back to work in 6 weeks but this time around I want to start a milk stash sooner than later (even though I'm off until Oct). When is it ok to start an extra pump session? I've always heard not to start too soon because of oversupply? With DS I barely made enough. Thoughts?

I would wait until after the 3 week growth spurt. I still haven't started pumping yet. I'm enjoying not HAVING to pump as long as I can, haha. Plus I was hoping my OB would write me a rx for a new one.

  • I started pumping right away once a day. For the first 2-3wks everything got fed right back to the baby, after that I was able to freeze 3-5oz per day.

  • I think the best bet is wait till 4 weeks then start pumping... And it could be that you dont respond to the pump as well as your baby... But i have heard that the second time around its much easier...
So wait for 4 weeks and go from there! :)

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • Just like you, I wanted to build up my supply sooner even though I don't go back to work until September. Like others have said, I was told 4 weeks when I asked the ped. Truthfully, I didn't get going until about 6 weeks, mostly because I hate pumping, but also because I wanted to get through the first month with baby stress free. I try to pump once a day after our second feeding of the day. I don't feel like I have an oversupply, but I think I need to be better about consistently pumping every day.

  • I started between 4-6 weeks. I only pump once a day in the morning when my supply is the most. With ds I wasnt able to pump much but this time around its been a lot better. Since you are off until Oct Id say hold off pumping as long as you can. I hate pumping. ;)

  • I started around 4 weeks and would pump once a day right after one of ds' feeds. Then when he started sleeping one 5 hour stretch I would pump right after he ate because I would always have extra milk. When my milk plummeted at around 7 weeks because I hurt my back and was on meds I pumped right after his last feed at night and after the middle of the night feed. That got my milk back up and then some. So right now I only pump during my middle of the night feed for extra milk and my stash is great! I am also pumping 3 times a day while at work and my milk has stayed up thank god. But yeah I wouldn't over do it. Just once after one of the feeds and when I said I pumped I have never done it more then 5-8 minutes to get what I need. Good luck!
