I believe I am starting to experience some heartburn. I am going to call dr. tomorrow but in the meantime I am wondering what others are doing for relief.
I take 75mg of Zantac (ranitidine) twice a day, and I did when I was pregnant with DS, too. My OB okayed up to 150mg twice a day, but suggested that I start with 75mg, and that works for me. It's pregnancy category B, so I'm not too worried about it. I also have to avoid spicy foods or I won't be able to sleep, even with the Zantac. I occasionally take a few tums, too.
Avoiding my favorite foods (spicy, fried, sweets) has helped a lot. I also have gone on Zantec, though, to relieve the constant discomfort during the day. It would come on even from just drinking water! Early on I did use Vanilla ice cream as an immediate relief technique. It worked for me, but wasn't a healthy habit to sustain.
Good luck! I can only hope it will subside once LO comes out. I hear this means LO will have a lot of hair. Will be fun to see if that's at all true

I've always heard that, too. But after heartburn so bad that I had to stay propped up on three pillows to sleep, my son came out totally bald... and stayed bald until he was almost two!
Yup, awful awful. Tums, constantly. And nevermind that it's already 90 degrees every day here despite only being June, my husband says he read somewhere to not drink as many cold beverages to stave off the heartburn. Drink warm stuff. NO THANK YOU!
Prop yourself up on pillows when you are sleeping. Also, certain foods may make your heartburn worse so just see if you can figure out your trigger foods and avoid them (ex: spicy food). Also Zantac and Tums are a God send.
Try drinking water mixed with small amount of baking soda. This will stops heartburn immediately. I've been doing this for months to control my heartburn. It works better than tums. Just keep in mind that baking soda is a salt, so you don't want to overdo it.
For my first pregnancy and this one I started off with taking Pepcid and then it stopped working after a few weeks. So my OB prescribed Protonix for me and that has been a god send. Also, like PPs mentioned keep an eye on trigger foods, don't lay down too soon after eating, and let your doctor know if over the counter things aren't working.
My husband used to use Protonix. I didn't realize that was pregnancy safe. Good to know.
Yes! It has returned. I had heartburn in my 1st trimester, but it subsided. In the last week, it has returned with a vengeance! The trigger was garlic, but now it's any food with a high acidity. I ate some delicious pizza for lunch yesterday but was in pain through the evening. Tums helped only a little.
I've had heartburn since 10 weeks. I can't have acidic things like tomato sauce (no pizza, spaghetti, etc.) or it gets pretty bad. Your doctor is probably going to tell you to take Tums or Pepcid/Zantac. They are safe for pregnancy.
You just survive. Keep in mind even a zantac or rantandine a day plus tums may not keep the heartburn away. My child is seriously killing me with heartburn.

Farida, our first child, born on the 19th of July 2014
Farida, at 8 weeks
My OB said no more than 6 tums/day. More than that increases your risk of kidney stones from the excess calcium.

I use tums all the time. I mostly get heartburn during the night and it can get really bad sometimes.
I had heartburn so bad from week 8 on... These really helped!
