Age recs on toys

Do you pay attention to age recommendations or warnings on toys?
I will admit that I usually don't put much stock into them, I mean I use common sense. But I sent a link to my ILs about a toy I think DD will love for her birthday (they asked what she wants) and it's something that I wouldn't think twice about getting for DD. But apparently has an age warning not for under 3 and they are "concerned" and "it might be pushing it."
My ILs are over-thinkers so it's not completely surprising they'd say this, but it makes me a little miffed that they think I can't read or have poor judgement or something. DH and I have no problem getting the toy ourselves, we will just tell them something else if they're uncomfortable and it's nbd in the end, I just thought it was odd. Am I wrong?
This is the toy (been sold out for months that's why I was telling the ILs to get it now) https://www.disneystore.com/plush-toys-olaf-singing-plush-frozen-medium-10-1/2/mp/1341305/1000267/

I go by what I think A would like. She has some 3+ toys that she plays with on a regular basis. I think that Olaf is fine

  • I'd buy that and wouldn't think twice.

  • I don't see anything wrong with that. I would but it for Wesley. I don't usually look at age requirements. I tend to purchase things I know he would like and get lots of use.

  • Emma has loved those types of toys since she was a tiny baby. My husband's grandmother used to get one at every holiday when she bought so many cards at hallmark she got a singing plush for $10. Never paid attention to what age they said but they were all basically the same as that Olaf.

  • I do check the age rec, and yes, we do have toys that are 3+.

Some of the 3+ toys are listed as such b/c they are imaginative play toys, which is a skill that kids don't develop until they are older; ie, toys like play kitchen.  We recently bought a firehouse (complete with firefighters, bunk beds, tables/chairs, fire pole) for DS.  He doesn't know how to play with it yet - he just runs his cars and trucks in the firehouse and throws the tables/chairs down the fire pole.

But some of the 3+ toys are b/c of choking hazards, and those I either won't buy OR make sure the small parts are removable so I can keep them away from DS.  He still puts a ton of stuff in his mouth.

In your situation, your toys says "CHOKING hazards".  I think your ILs are probably well-meaning; plus they likely don't want to be responsible if your DD does end up putting stuff in her mouth and had a choking accident.

  • For me, one year off is NBD, but Norah doesn't put anything in her mouth and she plays with big bro's toys all the time anyway.
