  • my nephew was tongue tied and it was a very very fast procedure and easy recovery.  It took a while to figure it out, the earlier the better.

I'm hoping so! I'm annoyed I can't get in until next week and I feel so bad for my little gal.

  • Our pedi clipped DS's frenulum in her office in about 2 seconds. I immediately nursed him after she clipped it and that was that. Nothing else was needed recovery wise.

This. It is hereditary in my DH's family. My DS was tt, and we had it clipped in about 2 seconds by an ENT. He nursed immediately after and was fine inside of 5 minutes.

In the meantime, it helped to feed him in the football hold. That seemed to work better for him than the traditional way.

  • My best friend's baby had this problem and I remember her saying it was a very simple procedure and recovery and it really helped with latching properly. Good luck to you!

  • My DH is actually tongue tied. My MIL always said she had issues keeping him (breast)fed, so she switched to formula. I didn't know tongue tied was an actual "thing" until this board. He's 29 and wants his clipped in the worst way.

All that aside: my nephew had the same thing and the pedi just clipped it right in the office.

  • Thanks for the input! I'm sure I'm making more out of it than what needs to be but I'm just so nervous for her and our breast feeding journey... She has a posterior tongue tie so she can't move her tongue from side to side either.. I am one nervous mama

  • My son was tt and had to be put down and get his clipped, he was about 18months old at the time. But drom what the ent said it was a bad case and it took longer than normal to clip. But im sure thats rare.
  • DS was tongue tied, the on call pedi that discharged him noticed it and they clipped it before we even left the hospital. They took him to the nursery for the last of his blood work and to do it, he came back 20 minutes later asleep and good to go.

  • My nephew was tongue-tied and my sister waited to have it clipped until he was around 4 and had obvious speech issues. I think the sooner you get it done, the better. DH at 31 is tongue-tied and hates it. If any of our kids are tongue-tied we'll have it clipped as newborns to hopefully avoid feeding and speech issues.
  • My DS was tongue tied.. Didn't realize it until around 6 weeks old. Went to ENT and got it clipped.. Nursed him right after and stopped bleeding right away. The procedure sounds much worse than it is.. No problems at all and successfully breastfed for 9 months.

I'm an ENT, and I can assure you this is a common and simple procedure. Your LO will definitely cry, but as soon as you nurse him once it's over he'll feel better, and he should have no pain afterwards. The only time we put patients under anesthesia for this is once they're no longer infants bc it's too hard to get them still enough to ensure you do a good job without inadvertently injuring a lip or something. And when they're older it can bleed a bit. Good luck, I'm sure it will go well!!

  • DS was completely tied. All the way to the tip. I pumped and cup fed for 2 days and then the pediatrician clipped it in office. It was more difficult for me to watch then it was on him. He was ready to latch as soon as the numbing wore off.

Both my boys have been tongue tied. They both had them clipped at their 1 week appointment. It took a second and barely bled. We didn't have to go to the ENT our pedi did it.
