HFM and cleaning

DS has hand foot and mouth, picked it up from daycare. I figure I should wipe down/clean some of his toys as  a precaution (though I do not think you can re-infect yourself). Any tips for cleaning toys.

Re: HFM and cleaning

  • you can soak hard toys for a few minutes in a solution of 1/2 cup bleach per gallon of water. anything soft i'd throw in the wash.

i think it's not a bad idea to clean toys regularly, anyway.

  • My LO was diagnosed with HFM today too, so I'm in the same boat.

  • Lurker here.  I put the little toys in one of those mesh laundry bags in the dishwasher.  Bigger hard toys go right on the upper rack.  Soft toys go through the wash and them air dry or tumble on low or airdry in the dryer.

  • DD had it about 1 month ago. Never thought to disinfect her toys. Just waited for the storm (so to speak) to pass...and it did. Sorry I didn't answer your specific question but maybe you don't need to go through all the effort? Our pedi never mentioned anything about disinfecting toys. I just don't put my hands near my face without washing them first (basic hygiene).
  • I throw all of LO's fluff toys in the washer machine on gentle and hang dry. Anything plastic I wash with babyganics and a cloth. You can also put them in the dishwasher with a little bit of vinegar.

I would maybe think about putting a few toys out and putting some to the side? So that way you're not constantly rewashing everything. I am sure it sounds easier said than done.

  • I would go through and wash everything now and again when your child isn't contagious. The pedi we saw in urgent care even said to get a new toothbrush and disinfect it after every brushing (letting it soak in mouthwash).

  • No need to sterilize. You can't reinfect yourself. We went thru this a few weeks ago. Our doc said (and gave us a handout from Amer Assn of Peds or some such group that said every kid will get this, it has no long-term ill effects, and they no longer recommend keeping kids quarantined from other kids while they have it bc by the time you know they have it, they've already infected everyone in sight. That shocked me.
  • anything soft goes in the washing machine...the smaller stuff i throw in the bathroom with hot water and either soap or white vinegar....the bigger toys like stand up toys,i wipe down with hot water and vinegar.
