Trying to Get Pregnant

TTC 6 months, Thyroid issues

Hello,

This is a slightly complicated journey, so I'll start from the beginning.  I have taken BC on and off since I was about 17 (I just turned 30).  I was also diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 23 and had my thyroid totally removed.  Since that time, my endocrinologist has kept me on a high dose of T4 and T3 to suppress my TSH levels (essentially, I was kept at "hyperthyroid" levels) to lower the likelihood of my cancer reoccurring.  Once I started TTC they began lowering my dose.  My T4 is now in the "normal" range (although on the high end of normal).  I stopped taking the BC pill 6 months ago, when I started TTC.  I got a positive LH surge two weeks later and have had a positive LH surge every month thereafter.

However, I did notice that my luteal phase was really short (like 9-10 days).  I did some research and found out that Vitex (chasteberry) is was really good for lengthening the luteal phase, so I gave it a go.  As promised, it lengthened my luteal phase from 9-10 days to 14 days--yahoo!!!  However, I have been noticing the last few months that I've been spotting (brown with a little tissue) for 1-2 days, 5 days before my period.  I thought it was implantation bleeding, but I guess not because I still dont get a positive PG test.

Additionally, I found out that despite lowering my T4 dose (I went from 175 mcg to 100 mcg incramentally), my TSH is still only at .04...and I've heard that it needs to be around 1.0.

I'm concerned about this pre-period spotting, and whether or not it is even possible for me to get pregnant with a TSH at .04, even though my T4 and T3 levels are now considered in the normal range. Also, this last month I either didn't ovulate at all, or I ovulated way earlier than normal.  I normally get a positive LH surge around day 18-19.  This month, I started testing on day 16, and never got a positive result (I tested for a week).  Then I got some spotting, which then stopped, and it has now been 7 days and I'm still waiting for my period to start.

Help!  What is going on?!

What did your doctor say when you brought this up?
Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.

  • Did your doctors know about the vitex? You should really not take things without talking to your doctor, especially when you are already dealing with other health concerns.

  • I need to go see my endocrinologist again and have made an appointment with a doctor that deals with infirtility (although I don't know that is what I am experiencing). My regular doctor said that the spotting could just be "me" (??), and my OB said that a 9 day luteal phase is fine. That's all the info I have been able to get :(. My endocrinologist and the infirtility doc can't get me in for a few weeks. I had thought that these symptoms may just be a 1 time deal, but it is happening again this cycle too
  • I talked to my regular doctor and she said the vitex was fine to take.

Well, vitex can fuck up all kinds of things. So you should probably stop that nonsense since you didn't even talk to your doctor about it. You have no idea how long your LP actually is unless you're temping your bbt for several cycles to see a pattern, so you may have been self medicating a non issue.

Why are you going to see a fertility doctor? Give only been of bcp for 6 months. It can take a healthy couple up to a year to concieve.

  • Well I did talk to my regular doctor and she said vitex is fine. Also, when I called my OB with these questions, she referred me to the infertility specialist rather than making an appointment with my regular OB (they are in the same office). Furthermore, your luteal phase can be detected from the time of ovulation (12-36 hours after LH surge) and a period. Since I have been tracking my LH surge with an OPK every month, I know within a day or two when I will ovulate, and by extension, how long my luteal phase is.
  • I think you need to go back to your endo with all of this. It's a very complex situation. I agree with Elly about the Vitex. Hold off on that until you talk to your RE about it. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the feedback. I'm off vitex, still no period (7 days post spotting, 2 days overdue) but neg tests. I think this cycle is a little screwy. I will try again next month I guess!!! I have a thermometer, but I get really varied results from day to day so I stopped using it. It was constantly up and down

Are you temping orally? Did you read the tutorials on FF?

  • Temping orally while still in bed. No I didn't read the tutorials on FF, where can I find them? Newbie post?

LINK. And if you're temping orally and getting rocky temps, try vaginally. You probably sleep with your mouth open.

  • I do sleep with a night guard in (lol probably sooo attractive), so I'll try vagunally. Can a regular thermometer work or does it have to be a bbt?
  • Oh and I'm tracking everything (cm and LH test results) on ovia by ovuline. They have a bbt chart I can use there as well, but just haven't used it because of my crazy temps. I'll give it a go now though
