July/August Book Club Suggestions?

I am now taking suggestions for our next book. Personally, I'm leaning on the strong side for something fun/light for easy beach reading. Remember, it must also have a movie!

What would you like to read and watch? What goes with mojitas?

  • The new Bridget Jones book, Mad About the Boy
< refuses to acknowledge existence of this book based on widely publicized spoiler. REFUSES!
I live in a bubble and didn't have it spoiled for me, so I spent a good hour last night sniffling and wiping away tears. Fucking first chapter.
I haven't heard the spoilers (maybe Canada is more circumspect regarding book gossip ;) ) so now I'm going to read it.... But I'm having a hard time resisting the temptation to Google.

Does anyone else read Marian Keyes?

  • It's not a movie, but JK Rowling has a new one out under her pseudonym.

    The Secret Life of Bees
    The Help
    The Time Travelers Wife

The JK Rowling one is an awesome beach read. No movie, but I'd get behind that book.

The Help would also be great!
  • @MissDemeanor‌ I love Marian Keyes! I think she might also have a new one??

    Other suggestions:
The Art Forger (I'm reading now, very good)
How to Cook a Tart - funny murder mystery
    A Lisa Scottoline
    DD1 - Evelyn Riley - 9/30/11
    DD2 - Charlotte Avery - 1/27/14

  • Maybe we should find something that is currently in the theatre, then we'd have an excuse for a date night.

That's two BC bonuses, because we also get to relax with drinks and snacks and say "sorry honey, it's for book club. That's like homework"

  • I don't know if there would be any interest, but I want to read Gone Girl, then watch the movie (whenever it comes out). The movie was actually filmed locally-the production crew used a few vacant buildings and turned them into fictional places for the movie set.

Gone Girl has taken a bit of crap, but I really liked it.

Another book turned soon to be movie is The Book of Negros. I heard a rumour that it was called something else in some countries. The book was excellent, and I'm really looking forward to the movie.

@golfergirl08 I don't think there are any movies, but there should be. I'm excited if there's a new book! eTA Re: Marian Keyes

Me too, one of my all time favourite reads! I want to go read it again now!
  • I would definitely be on board with Gone Girl.  I really like Dark Places so I've been meaning to read more by her.

Just googled Book of Negros/Someone Knows My Name   I think I'll be reading this soon with or without bookclub.

I was just trying to remember the name of The Help. I heard great things about it.
  • @magentawarped The Help is great. I loved both the book and the movie. I think I already mentioned that on this thread, whoops. I also thought Gone Girl was a good read. I would definitely be down for that!

@mevaroo I just read Wuthering Heights last year so I would be up for that! Not a light read, and I didn't really like it that much, but I would be interested in seeing the movie.

May I suggest any John Grisham book with a movie? I love all his books, and I have seen and enjoyed a couple of the movies. The Client, The Pelican Brief, and I love love love A Time To Kill.
I love John Grisham books, and have a MILLION things to say about book vs. Movie

My suggestion is The Great Gatsby. We can all were fringe dresses and drink champagne

You said fun/light { Hunger Games, Divergent, The Princess Bride,Ella Enchanted

I've wanted to read/see The Perks of Being a Wallflower; reading The Lovely Bones might make more sense to me than the movie did; The Host was good (slow in the beginning IMO)
