Reflux - Rice Cereal

DD is 5 weeks and was diagnosed with reflux. She was put on Prevacid twice a day, and the pedi also recommended switching formulas to Enfamil AR. I can't use our regular standard level one Dr. Brown's nipple because nothing goes through it. I've also tried the Y-Cut nipple, but the flow is way too fast for her and half of it ends up on her. Should I go up to a level 2 nipple? What does everyone else do in this situation? Thanks!!

Re: Reflux - Rice Cereal

  • I would try the level 2. I've found just this week with DD that the nipples that were working for the past 9wks are no longer working. I'm going to try level 2.

  • With DS1 when we added rice we had to switch to the level 2 nipples.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • My dr just had us add rice and do a cross cut in the bottles, but they aren't working. They are pouring out too fast.
I am planning to try level two also.
  • I took a level 1 and pushed a corkscrew through it to widen the hole and it works great.... Just don't mistake nipples when using for straight milk, that can cause quite the mess.
  • @firebelle26‌ what were DD's symptoms? We think my DD might have reflux as well. She is 7 weeks and doctor gave me a script for Prevacid and it makes her really sleepy, spitting up more, and also gave her diarrhea. Just wondering what your daughters symptoms were and if you are having any of the same side effects?

  • I actually had to stop using my tommee tippee bottles because even the 1 was too fast for her but now that she is using the formula with the rice, the flow is just right! Go ahead and go up to a 2 and see how it goes :)

@Deems83 - she was very fussy at the bottle. Crying all of the sudden, and would stop when the bottle was put back in her mouth for about a minute, then full on crying again. Spit up, sometimes it looked like she spit up the whole bottle she just drank. Lots of throat clearing sounds while sleeping at night. I know grunting is normal, but it wasn't grunting - almost like the acid was coming up and she was trying to clear her throat to make it feel better. Also shaking her head back and forth while eating.

We've been feeding her at an angle (she is formula fed) and keeping her upright after she is done for about 10 minutes. Also lots of burping while feeding her (well, we try - she is a horrible burper at times). I also give her gas drops after each feeding - and sometimes in the middle if she is really fussy.

To answer your question, since she's been on Prevacid (almost a week) I think she has improved. I definitely haven't seen any diarreah, and it's hard to tell if it's making her sleepy since she sleeps so much as it is. She still spits up sometimes, and my pedi said sometimes a gas bubble gets trapped under the formula, and when they burp a lot of the formula will come up with it since that reflex isn't really developed yet. Pedi also said some spit up is totally normal.

Sorry so long! I hope the answers your question! Good luck and I hope your DD feels better. It's so hard to see them in pain. :(

  • I tried Level 2 nipples, and it worked like a charm! Thanks everyone!

  • I just opened my level 2 nipples and they have two little wholes instead of the one on level 1. I just waiting until tonight to try one to see if the cereal flows through.

It worked for me! And I noticed she's not spilling so much out of the corners of her mouth either. Maybe that's because of the thickened formula with the rice cereal? Good luck!

  • @firebelle26‌ thank you! That actually sounds pretty much exactly what my dd is going through. I was given Zantac for her though and not Prevacid. Hopefully it gets better, so far it only seems worse.

  • DS did not have a reaction like that to the cereal. But he was pretty fussy for a few days after his shots...

  • @firebelle26‌ have you noticed a difference with the cereal? My girl has reflux and spits up A TON. So much so I have to make another small bottle sometimes. I'm sick of hearing, it's fine as long as she gains weight.
