Apps for Speech Development

Hi,

It's been a while since I have written on here, but am looking for some good apps that I thought you guys could recommend.  My DD has always been a little behind in speech but we are not too concerned, she always does things in her own time. What has helped us a lot are her apps on the iPad she repeats everything and recognizes the objects ourt of context (the app) but I would like her to start stringing these words together.  Are there any apps that you can recommend where they hear two/three words together?  We have these apps already: Mokey Preschool, Peek a Boo Barn/Fridge, Endless Reader/ABCs?Number, Sound/Video Touch.  Oh not sure if this helps but she is 3 in August.  TIA!

Re: Apps for Speech Development

  • My DD is 3 and has a speech disorder.  Apps could be very helpful for recognizing a single object (dog, apple) but I never used them to help improve her speech.  The best thing for us was simple books.  Brown Bear is a great book because it is repetitive.  Anything by Sandra Boynton because she uses simple phrases.

I'm sorry that I'm not giving you app suggestions but I don't think that is really what will help her.

  • I agree with the PP. I don't know of any apps. My DD is in speech therapy for an expressive language delay and they have never recommended any sort of electronic aid. They always suggest reading and lots of one on one conversations so the child learns how to form words.

  • DD is slightly delayed but not enough to qualify for speech therapy. What they told us is to read to her and ask lots of questions. If she points and says "cheese" then ask "do you want some cheese?", that sort of thing. It has helped a little, she is starting to string more words together.

  • I'm a speech therapist and I would recommend a lot of play/ reading!  When you are playing with your LO, make sure you are modeling correct sound/ language production.  If your LO says "cheerios," you should model saying " I want cheerios please!"  Reading to your LO is great and it is perfect to play games to find vocabulary words.  For example, your child could point to a picture of a bear and say "bear".  Then you can ask your LO whether it is a big or small bear. Yes darling it is a "small bear."  Also, you can ask what color the bear (Yes it is a small, brown bear) and what do bears eat?  These kind of interactions help with expressive language.  "Bear eats berries!" Guiding questions can help with the expansion of your LO's ideas.

As far as apps go, there are a few that I like.  Truthfully, I think children benefit more from interactions, such as through play, conversation, and reading.  However, I do know a lot of people and children are motivated by technology so here goes... ArticPix, Story Builder, Talking Tom.
  • Baby babble. I'm not sure if there's an app but it's on YouTube.
  • Thanks!  We already do quite a bit of reading (the same few at a time so she can learn the words) and adding adjectives to nouns, repeating back and adding an adjective,  just looking for a little bit more!  Our apps did help quite a bit though so I figure why not try some new ones.
  • Sorry, I am no professional but you should google language development and screen time.  The ipad and other electronics are not recommended especially for children who are behind in language.  It enables them to isolate themselves, thus, not engaging in communication with others.  Your child can learn words and recognize them from books too.  No ipad necessary.
