Baby William in the hospital... Support appreciated!

Hi everyone,

I have been mostly MIA for the last couple of days (and likely will be for the foreseeable future) because Will is in the hospital with an infection. He spiked a fever on Thursday night and we rushed him to the ER and they admitted us. He is doing really well at the moment, but we will likely be here a while as they wait for bacteria cultures to come back and Will gets a full course of IV antibiotics. I don't have the time or energy to get into all the details, but maybe I will later... I just wanted to check in quickly to let everyone know and ask that you keep our sweet boy in your thoughts. My wife is being awesome, but postpartum emotions are truly kicking my butt and I can't seem to talk about any of this without crying. I will be checking in periodically when I can...

I'm so sorry, KH. Ash was in the hospital at 2.5 weeks and it was a terribly emotional and terrifying experience. I hope Will is better soon and able to come home. My best warm and healing thoughts to all of you.

Thank you everyone. Will is sleeping on my wife right now, and I have had coffee, so now I feel up to updating a little bit more now... It is a urinary infection likely caused by something called bladder reflux that causes a little leftover urine to travel back up to the kidneys instead of getting peed out right away. Looks like Will's case is mild, but that is what caused the infection. Unfortunately he showed no symptoms early on and the infection spread to his blood (this can happen quickly in infants). The blood infection can be more serious because it can spread in the body, so getting strong antibiotics to treat the infection is very important. He has been on 2 antibiotics for 36 hours now and is doing well. He hasn't had a fever since yesterday afternoon, and he is eating like a champ and sleeping well. He has been through ALOT in the last few days but has been so good. Lots of needle sticks and poking and prodding and unfortunately a spinal tap which was the worst thing I have ever been through. He is a strong boy. Anyway they ruled out meningitis first which was a huge relief. Once this infection clears he will have to be on low dose antibiotics for a few months to prevent further infection and he should grow out of the bladder reflux. We should know by tonight about how long we will likely be in the hospital for... So that is the story. They took his stats yesterday when they admitted him 10lb 9oz and 22.5 inches long! Here is a pic if him sleeping on my chest smiling earlier today. I love him, and need to be strong for him. He is so awesome. I just need him to be ok... In other news my in-laws are amazing! My MIL has been at our house all morning doing laundry, taking out trash, washing our sheets... She said she didn't want us to have to go home to anything to worry about. My FIL is also apparently power washing our house today, and the have Reese (our dog) and said they would take card of her as long as needed. We didn't ask for any of that, they just did it. It is so nice to have that kind of support. Will is a lucky boy to have them as grandparents

I'm so sorry that you have to go through this! I remember those post partum emotions, I can't imagine having to deal with this on top of them. Sounds like you have wonderful care and a terrific support system. I'll keep your sweet family in my thoughts as baby william heals.

I'm so glad to hear Will is doing better. He's such a brave little guy, I love the pic of him smiling despite all the craziness going on. He must really feel loved and safe with such amazing parents watching over him!!

It's great you have such a wonderful support system. I hope you're all home enjoying a sparkly clean house and some peaceful snuggles with your LO soon.

Update for today: We just saw the dr - she said Will looks "fantastic" - the new blood draw from yesterday came back clean for bacteria, so that means that the antibiotics are working. The original blood work from the ER on Thursday night is still growing but it looks like it is a bacteria very responsive to antibiotics. The plan as of now is that we will continue IV antibiotics for the next couple of days and we *might* be able to go home on Wed or Thurs with amoxicillin if everything continues the same. Will is eating and sleeping well and has had no fever for almost 48 hours! We are also off "precautions" which means we can take Will for walks in the hospital and aren't confined to our hospital room. We gave him a doing bath last night and put him in his own onesie from home, and I think that made a difference too. As of this morning, another development seems to be that he is smiling (I think they are real responsive smiles - not the gas ones!) ... Not a milestone I thought we would celebrate in the hospital, but we will take all the positive that we can

Thank you for all of your continued support. This is definitely not how I wanted to spend this time, but we are lucky to have a strong little guy, a supportive family and a wonderful hospital so close to home. Counting my blessings and trying to get through til we can go home!

Ugh, so sorry to hear you guys as in the hospital. I am glad he is getting better. Urinary tract infections are so tough in little ones since most of the time you don't know they are sick until they spike a fever. Hang in there Mommas! We will be thinking about you.

Thank you so much everyone! Here is a quick update for today: Will had a test called a VCUG today to confirm the bladder reflux diagnosis, but the test came back negative, so it was not reflux that caused the infection. Right now the doctors are saying that the cause of the infection was random/"bad luck" and occasionally these things happen in infants and it cannot be otherwise explained. They would only do additional testing if he had recurring infections, but at this point they believe this to be a one time deal. Which is good news but also slightly frustrating because as parents we want to know why and know what we can do to avoid this in the future. The answer to that seems to be nothing at this point... Today was a really tough day... The VCUG test was hard on him (he had to be catheterized) and then he pulled out his first IV and they had to struggle to put in a new one and couldn't find a vein. On top of that I had a fight with insurance because my employer screwed something up about adding Will to my policy, so that was fun. And finally, there is a new little boy in the room across the hall from us that screams at the top of his lungs 24/7. Will has been cranky today, and it think part of that is the VCUG and struggle for the new IV, and part of it is that he is just ready to get out of here and can sense our stress and just is over it as much as we are. BUT he is still fever free, and otherwise is doing great, so we are just here until the full course of IV antibiotics can be completed. Hoping to go home Wednesday. We are still lucky in the grand scheme of things. I am just ready for my baby to stop being poked and prided and for us to return to our own home and routine and hopefully get some rest. My wife says this is "small potatoes" ... So now when either of us is stressed or upset with being here we just look at each other and say "tater tots" ... We are lucky to have a healthy little boy, and this is just a bump in the road. Tomorrow will be a better day!

So glad to see this update. I was thinking about you earlier today. I'm sorry your little boy has gone through so much, but so glad that he is on the mend and it's nothing more serious. Fingers crossed you are home in no time!
