Food to bring a new Mama

Two of my good friends just had babies within the past week and another one is due in a month.  I want to bring them all something that is going to be helpful and appreciated.  Someone brought me muffins which were great in the beginning.  I would just grab one when I got hungry.  I also was given a few good casseroles.  What were some of the dishes that you were given when you had your LO?  I don't want to make them all lasagne, but I'm not that creative.  Any ideas?

Re: Food to bring a new Mama

  • Zucchini bread, homemade Mac and cheese, soups, a batch of enchiladas, a roast...or an hour of babysitting and a gift card to a local restaurant ;-)

Cut up watermelon/fruit, roast, veggies and hummus, lunchmeat, cheese, crackers, yogurt
anything one handed if you bf.. I found that people brought a lot of heavy food, and I wanted lots of fruit. But the dinners were helpful when dh got home. Through the day however I mostly snacked one handed.
  • Some of my favs were bagels and deli meats, salad kits, and fruit salads. Quick easy and semi nutritious :)
  • King Ranch casserole. Yummmm. https://www.ro-tel.com/recipes-King-Ranch-Chicken-3541.html

Or sandwich makings. Good bread or rolls, good deli meat and assorted sliced cheeses. Maybe a couple of whole tomatoes and a head of romaine lettuce too.

I appreciated packaged "junk" snacks too, especially that first week as my milk came in and I was recovering from surgery. Things like cereal bars, granola bars, crackers, cookies, and bottled or canned drinks.

We really liked the casseroles we received. One friend made two for us, one for now and one to freeze, and provided the recipe and cooking instructions. She also brought paper plates and napkins. I have made it again since we ate the two she gave us so including the recipe was nice. Other things people brought that we liked: energy bars, frozen burritos (you can eat them one handed!), meatloaf, soup (packaged in individual containers that we could just pop in the microwave) and fruit. I also really enjoyed when visitors called ahead to take our Starbucks order. We live in Seattle, what can I say!

Care to share the recipe? :)

Honestly anything I didn't have to make myself was great! But what I loved with DS1 was my mom baked me a couple loaves of banana bread. I would grab a slice of that when I woke up to BF for the MOTN feedings.

When I take friends food I have a Cheesy Chicken Spaghetti that I almost always do. Its a little time intensive, but it is so yummy. And since it makes a huge batch I save half for our dinner too!

I agree with the easy-to-grab and quick-to-eat things. Casseroles are good for dinner time, but don't give them too much of the same thing. My mom gave us FIVE 13x9 lasagna dishes and we shared half with DH's sisters, froze 1, and the rest ended up being tossed after sitting too long in the fridge. The other thing my mom did, which I was so thankful for, was stock my pantry and fridge with healthy snacks, fruits, veggies, chips, cookies, pre-made meals from Central Market, and anything else she could put her hands on. Obviously, that was a big expense, but having a variety of things was nice.
