Spewing your political crazy on FB

Ugh, why is this a thing? I'm FB friends with a CW of DH's. Last night she posted this tirade about the "humanitarian crisis" AKA emotional blackmail regarding the unaccompanied minors crisis and went on about how now she can't retire because she has to feed, clothe and pay for medical care for these ALIENS!!!!111!!!eleven!!.

Her fellow cold hearted jerks began commenting in agreement with several people commenting on how sad it is that Obama said his goal is to turn the US into a third world country by the end of his term. I'm sorry but what the actual fuck??!!! I really wanted to engage these idiots but for the sake of peace in the workplace for DH, I didn't. I did block her though so I don't have to see her ignorant fuckery anymore

did you miss the part where people are claiming president Obama has said his goal is to turn the US into a third world country? That's ignorant.

But how can you not 'friend' people like that? I am considering a purge after reading this. https://www.salon.com/2014/07/03/why_i_purged_my_facebook_friends_list/

Yeah, my mo totally doesn't get this. I have found out she was in the hospital via status update. I like having Facebook because it's a way for me to share things with family and friends who don't live nearby.

I didn't make any comments on the content. I think it is just a regular theme here that if someone has someone has something contrary to what you think or what " most" people think it is ignorant and there seems to be this breed of hatred and contempt for opinion. It's sad really.

I can get behind a difference of opinion. I cannot tolerate uneducated opinions/misinterpretations/outright lies presented as facts.

That's crazy! Fb was helpful and harmful during our accident and loss. It was nice to be able to put out one explanation and tell pretty much everyone we speak to regularly at once. However, before we got a chance to do that my ILs asked people to put out a prayer circle (whatever that means) and without our consent (or knowledge) a bunch of details we wanted to keep private was shared on fb. It was also posted before we could tell our closest friends over the phone.

IME, older people have no idea that fb etiquette exists and that has caused us a lot of problems.

I enjoy listening to different perspectives.  I don't enjoy listening to craziness.  The level of disrespect people show the President is insane.  I felt the same way when people called GWB the devil.  Completely uncalled for and it makes me immediately discount anything else you have to say.
I feel like no other president has been as disrespected as President Obama. It's totally disgusting the way people speak about our president
Agreed. If I don't agree with the president, then I just don't agree. I know, however, that his job is extremely stressful and hard to do. I don't think just anyone could do it, and to say that they're doing a shitty job just because you don't agree with them is ludicrous. Even if you don't agree with them or even like them, at the very least, show them some respect.

I am probably one of the more conservative (politically) posters on this board, and I can promise you that Que (or really anyone) would never call me ignorant if we don't agree.

But I also don't spew lies to make my point, so there's that.

Yes, thank you. DH's best friend is our polar opposite. He's a very conservative republican (and gay) and we love him dearly and have no problems discussing politics respectfully

I disagree, but only because George W Bush was pretty much treated like the village idiot.

ETA: I meant I disagree with no other president being so disrespected. That was not clear.
When I said I agreed it was with the general sentiment of how people trash talk our President (and by our, I mean the one we had at a certain time, not anyone specifically).

George Bush was probably disrespected just as much as Obama. He was treated like the village idiot and people were pretty rude about him. Same with Obama, not the village idiot part, just that people hate him and bash him.

Either way, their job is really fawking stressful and I have respect for them no matter what even if my POV differs from theirs.

  • I'm all for a friendly political debate - OTOH, I have friends on my list I know when they post ANY thing that is political to repeat to myself "just walk away...just walk away" as many times as necessary. There is political ignorance on BOTH sides of the aisle. Heck, look at the stir the decisions out of the Supreme Court this last term produced, yet too many people didn't stop to think of the WHOLE picture, not just their ignorant bias, BEFORE they bothered to read the whole, o.k. even half of flipp'n ruling!

Of course, if someone's far off the deep end, to the point of no return it's the "unfriend" (rare) but the "not following" or "block their posts from my wall" option - which I tend to like better because most of the people I friended, on FB I did for a reason...

I'd be willing to bet that every president has a very vocal group of haters- I just think with social media and the hyper connectedness we share in this age, we're more aware of it.
Well, I also think, whether people want to talk about it or not, race plays a huge factor in Obama hate being dialed up.  I would expect the same amount of crazy, insane, hatred nonsense when there is eventually a female president, too.

Exactly. I really think there is a race component to the hatred and that is disgusting. People should feel free to disagree with the President. But the office of the Presidency deserves respect no matter what.

Agreed. While many people I knew disliked Bush's policies, there's a level of personal to the vitriol against Obama that I haven't seen before and I do think it's racially motivated.

Yeah, I found out via my mom's FB that doctors thought my grandma had cancer because my mom was trying to garner sympathy from her friends and complain about my grandfather.  When I called to inquire about said status update, she said, "Yeah, I was going to call you, I have just been really busy."  True story.

I also feel that people should be required to take social media etiquette awareness classes.

DH and I were JUST talking about that this weekend. It is a huge factor in the way everybody from regular citizens to the media treat him IMO.

There is so much room to disagree with Obama's policies (or any President) that I don't see the need to lung into personal attacks.  I just don't get it.
Agreed. And Joan Rivers comments on Michelle Obama were vile.
How has Joan Rivers not been voted off the island yet?
  • @marblerye‌ I definitely don't have a problem with people who disagree with policy. But I don't believe for a second that all of this "anti American Muslim non citizen" crap has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

Totally disagree with the race comment . But I do agree that the office deserves respect no matter the decision. That includes Obama and Bush and all the rest

So you're saying that if he was white people wouldn't be saying such offensive things? Or does he have to be white with a WASPy name? What if he was a white man named Muhammad...

I'm trying to wrap my head around thinking there is no subset or group of Obama haters with a racial bias. I need whatever you have to be smoking to think that.
I hope you don't think I was saying that...

Not at all (or at least I didn't read it that way). Disagreeing with policy is cool and has happened with every president ever. That's normal. It's the personal attacks, the insistence that he's the antichrist, not American, etc. that is problematic. There sadly is a large group that may also disagree with his policy, but started out opposing him due to his race (whether or not they want to admit it) and those are the people I have a beef with. Someone who has solid reasons to disagree with his policy I can respect.

And honestly, I don't hate W as a person even though I fundamentally disagree with pretty much everything his administration stood for. I actually think he seems likeable and he seems to be a good father and grandfather, just not a good world leader.

Rest assured my issues/disagreements with President Obama are not race related. Just fiscal and foreign policy related. ;)

It makes me so uncomfortable when people (not here, just in general) automatically assume my distaste is race based. I know that IS a factor for some ignorant assholes but I wish it wasn't. I've been in situations before where I've disagreed with someone and was called a racist. Nope, not a racist, just a fiscal conservative.

That was my side rant. You're welcome.
OH, I get that.  I am talking about actual people who say thing like he is a Kenyan Muslim.  That is race.

Yes, I totally think people can disagree or not like him. It's the comments about him not being American, etc, asking to see his birth certificate, etc. I don't think anyone here is saying things like that :)
