Trouble TTC

Are you *bleeping* kidding me!? Just need to vent!

So in my daily struggle to think about why I'm not O'ing, It crossed by mind about an NSAID medication I take for my knees. Of course, when I started seeing my RE and OB I listed all the drugs/vitamins I was taking, etc.,etc. This particular NSAID is called Mobic. So just for poops and laughs I googled the FDA info on it and it states right there, "Effects On Female Fertility Advise females of reproductive potential who desire pregnancy that NSAIDs, including Mobic, may be associated with a reversible delay in ovulation. For women who have difficulties conceiving, or who are undergoing investigation of infertility, use of meloxicam is not recommended".

Seriously!?!?!?!?!? So at what point did my OB and RE even think to mention this in the conversation about what to take, not to take. I realize what I put into my body is my own responsibility but I'm still so peeved! UGH!!!

Me: 31, PCOS

2nd round of P4 to induce AF. Metformin 2,000mg daily x2months - no change.

Medicated cycle #1 Femara 2.5mg x 5 days + Novarel = BFN.

Benched to redo labs, trying new meds. Starting Clomid next cycle.

Some people just need a high-five...in the face...with a chair.

Re: Are you *bleeping* kidding me!? Just need to vent!

  • :( I'm so sorry. I don't have any experience with this, but something seemingly so simply/easy to figure out or diagnose but missed would frustrate the crap out of me. Hugs.

  • ugh had a similar issue recently. sometimes i really want to scream at the dr's, why can i find what's going on or more information on something better than you without having gone to medical school?! it's so frustrating when you expect them to lay out everything for you since you, in theory, don't know and they don't give you important info. i had been stopping myself from googling and researching otherwise, for fear that they would think i'm just a hypochondriac looking for anything to fit, but now i don't care because the more i know the more i'm comfortable discussing things with them and have a better idea of various possibilities.
fingers crossed for you that you're able to find something else that works for your knee and that stopping the Mobic helps do the trick!

Breast Specialist: Most likely a large fibroid, but keeping an eye on it, repeat u/s every 6mos
HSG: clear tubes, uterus is A-ok
WHAT'S NEXT: DH's consult with surgeon to discuss next step for growth, either biopsy or surgery~Big discussion with Dr. before any possibility of starting Clomid, since I'll want another u/s before and to be monitored and he doesn't seem into that. Oh that's annoying. Hope you can sort things out. Good luck!

Official diagnosis: Unexplained IF. I am 32. I have low ovarian reserve (low AMH), and poor egg quality. I've also been diagnosed with mild glandular developmental arrest (lining problems, detected with EFT).

We are using open ID donor sperm. IUIs #1-7=BFN. IVF September 2014 antagonist protocol, 8R,5M,3F, 5 day transfer of 1 morula = BFN. IVF#2 planned for January 2015 (antagonist protocol + HGH).

  • I'm so sorry! RE should've caught this right away.... On the bright side, could this NSAID be the only thing causing IF?
  • Oh no!  That must be so frustrating.  I'm glad you have an appointment with a new OB.

Am I reading it correctly seeing that it is a reversible condition that can easily be corrected?
  • I have a ton of muscle pain and my neurologist wanted me to start taking lyrica but my RE said NO! They did tell me aleive and Tylenol are acceptable. They told me no ibuprofen because it interferes with progesterone.

I hope you get in touch with you RE and get some answers and maybe switch to something else that may help your pain that won't interfere with ovulation.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I thought I saw it say out was reversible so that's a plus. I'm glad you found this out, I don't know why none of your Drs thought about this a possible reason for your IF..crazy to have to check behind the Drs
  • How frustrating!

    Me: 20 | DH: 22

Married May 2013: TTC since May 2013

Currently making lifestyle changes in an effort to lose 100 pounds.

  • Wow, scary - so glad you found that! I'd already been told no NSAIDs, aspirin, or Ibuprofen, due to Crohn's, so it's been Tylenol-only overwhelming menstrual pain each month.

RE recommended Ibuprofen plus Tylenol/Codeine after a procedure, and I'm glad I piped up to say I wasn't supposed to take it, instead of just smiling and nodding, because then he said he would not add an Ibuprofen relative to the anesthesia.

That made me wonder though, because like you I'd heard that family of drugs is not good for fertility.

  • What?  So glad you posted this!  I use ibuprofen occasionally for an old shoulder injury.  But this last three weeks I've been dealing with tendonitis in my hand and also a broken tooth/crown last week, so I've been taking them regularly.  And took a lot today because of HSG.  Guess tomorrow I'll quit.

    Thanks for posting!
  • Damn. I'd be furious! Glad you caught that. I'm not sure what your DX is, but is there any chance this could be the only thing causing your IF? That could be some silver lining.

  • Idk if that could be the only thing causing it. I guess only time will tell. Good to know about the ibuprofen. Pintobean39- I wanna say that Aleve was on that list too. I didn't find an FDA page about it but I remember reading somewhere that Aleve could do the same thing. With my luck, nothing will change....

  • I really think that there should be some sort of return policy or money back guarantee when you get doctors that just don't know what they are doing.

I once had a doctor that (not kidding, but wish I was) checked my TSH and said they were too high, his response was to reduce my Levrothryroxine by half...

He must be one of those "stop trying and it will happen" kind of doctor right?

First off, on a completely unrelated note, @slinky0422, I love your sig. I saw another meme that said "Some people need a hug....around the neck....with a rope." haha.

Secondly, I'm sorry to OP for your issue with the meds. I'm kind of shocked they didn't catch that. NSAIDs are so common these days, you'd think they would have noticed. I would call right away and hope that maybe a few months off the drug will reverse it. Maybe there is something else you can take instead that won't affect fertility.
