7 Weeks Brown Spotting

Few days ago started experiencing "old blood" spotting (TMI brown discharge). It wasn't a lot but I didn't experience this with my first pregnancy so I called my OBGYN and scheduled an ultrasound. We got to see the baby and the heartbeat. Doctor said everything was perfect and saw no reason to worry. I'm measuring 7 weeks.

Well, this morning the spotting started again. Same thing. I know that the doctor said everything looked ok and I know there is really not a whole lot they can do if it isn't but what I'm wondering is if anyone of you experienced this in early pregnancy. I've read a lot that indicates that some women just spot during the first tri and it's not "normal" but it's not uncommon and could be harmless. I'd love to hear some positive personal experiences.

  • I've been spotting in varying intensity for 2 weeks now. I also didn't have this with my first pregnancy. Everything has looked alright this far... I have another u/s in a week. It's one of those things that people can say is common all day long but when it happens to you, it's not all that reassuring. As of right now have a healthy babe in your belly. Try not to stress too much, even though it's totally easier said than done in these situations.

  • Thank you so much for the reassurance. You're right. It's so hard not to stress. I'll just keep thinking about the little baby I saw yesterday. :)

@murrann  I just posted about this same problem the other day(terrible 1st trimester).  I had spotting at week 6 ranging from red/pink/brown that lasted a little over a week, then it stopped for a bit and then picked up again all of week 9, and now into week 10.(even at times it has been more then spotting-clots/bleeding)  The spotting is back to brown now, but doesn't seem like it wants to stop!  It is terrifying for sure, and my husband and I have had a hard time enjoying these last few weeks.  But on a positive note, I have had numerous ultrasounds already and each time they show a growing, healthy baby.  Even yesterday at my latest ultrasound we could see the little baby moving around and his or her's littler arm.  I am on pelvic rest and we are hoping that the spotting corrects itself soon.  try to stay positive, and keep in constant contact with your OB, never been scared to call them too much!  good luck!

I had some brown discharge at 6 weeks and went in for an ultrasound.  Everything looked good, so I relaxed for a couple days, then the spotting started again.  It was on and off for a couple weeks.  I am now 12 weeks, just had my NT scan, and everything is indicating a very healthy pregnancy!  It freaked me out every time it happened, and I still don't know the cause, but everything appears to be ok!

I had something similar to you.  No spotting at all for my 1st one and then some spotting around 8 weeks.  Just brown not bright red or anything.  I am now 36 weeks pregnant.  Positive thoughts.

I had this with both my pregnancies. As long as it is brown blood, and there are no cramps that's even better. I know it's hard because you have no control over what happens and we have no idea what is going on in our bellies right now...but just try to relax and not stress. Tell urself that u saw a healthy baby even tho u spotted and try to enjoy the pregnancy...I hate the first trimester...it truly is nerve wracking:(
  • Thank you SO much everyone. It's really very encouraging. The spotting has since stopped and my doctors are still saying everything is fine!!! My fingers are crossed that it doesn't start up again but if it does I'm going to try my best not to panic! Thanks again!!!
  • I'm around 5 weeks, so not as far as you.  I had some brown spotting (a very small amount) this weekend.  I didn't have it during my first pregnancy so I was a little concerned as well.  However, prior to the spotting, I had a good deal of uterus stretching and I read that the stretching can release some old blood.  I actually spoke with a friend of mine afterward, who is an OB nurse and she said it's usually not a concern unless the blood is red.  I didn't even call in to my midwife because after reading up, it sounds like it's probably nothing to worry about.  Hope that helps :)

  • I'm in the same boat! 7w5d with brown spotting. My doctor said it was normal and if I have any cramping to let her know ASAP. Hang in there!
  • Try not to worry. I had the same thing when I was 7 weeks. It lasted on and off for about 5 days. As long as there's no cramping I think your safe. Try to relax and stay positive!
