Advice for removing the bottle

Hello everyone,

My daughter just turned one and we have decided that it is time to ease her away from the bottle. She's been drinking water from a sippy for a few months now and she LOVES water, so we have no trouble with that.

This week, we decided to start replacing her morning bottle with a sippy of milk. She hates it. The second she realizes what is in it, she refuses to take it. We tried again at lunch, but she takes a sip and then immediately started pushing it away and turning her head. If we put water in it, she guzzles it. Today I decided to try giving her milk in a regular cup. She drank it slightly better, but she only drank a little and she's not very good with a cup yet, so it dribbled all over her chest. She was definitely more cooperative than she was with the sippy though.

We are still giving her a nighttime bottle. I'm not ready to remove that one, mainly because she is getting very little milk now that we've replaced the other bottle and she's only in the 5th percentile for weight, so I'm a bit paranoid. I know it will have to go eventually.

So basically, now that I've rambled on, I'm just looking for a little advice. Does anyone have any tips? I've been considering trying a straw cup, but we've never done one, so I don't know how she'll take to it. She does eat three regular meals throughout the day (and snacks) and I know that they don't need as much milk at this stage, but I'd feel so much better if I could get her to take some with her breakfast/lunch.

My husband tells me I'm being paranoid and that it has only been a few days and she'll get there, but I've had a lot of moms tell me their baby never fully took to milk outside of a bottle.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • DD started using a straw cup with a small amount of water starting at 6 months with meals.  She took to it very quickly.  She resisted milk in it regularly from 10-11 months (but I still had daycare try every day with lunch).  Oddly enough, she did fine with it at home (but not at daycare).  At 11.5 months I knew she was fine with the cup, and I was sick of bottles... So we went cold turkey and I packed everything away.  Daycare said she didn't bat an eye that day, it's like she knew the bottles were gone.  Definitely try a straw cup - they're better for their teeth and language development anyways.
  • We didn't push it either. We did a slow wean. At 12 months we went down to 2 bottles (morning and evening). After her 15 month appt per our pediatrician's recommendation, we just quit cold turkey. It's been a little over a month and she hasn't noticed. She would only drink warm milk out of the bottle. Every once in a while when she is fussy, I can get her to drink a little bit of warm milk our of her sippy cup.
  • Wish I had better advise for you, we just tookit away cold turkey. He did refuse the milk and only did water for about a day or tso but they he took it like a camp in the sippy cut
