10.5 month eating schedule

How much breast milk should my 10.5 month old be eating in an 8 hour period? He's currently getting three 4.5oz bottles from his baby sitter from 9am-6pm then I nurse on demand when I'm home from work. I'm wondering if this is ok or if I should be offering him more solids and less BM.

Re: 10.5 month eating schedule

  • My LO is just 9 mo, so he's not as old as yours, but I don't think this sounds like too much BM from 9-6 pm.  I do not think you need to push more solids in terms of quantity.  I would just be trying to advance the solids he does take to be more nutrient rich and higher calories as he is able to tolerate.  GL!

  • i think it's fine. but if you wanted to add more solids and take away a bottle, that would probably be fine, too. :) i always factored together my pumping output and DS's average consumption. around 7/8 months, when DS was eating some solids, i dropped down to 2 pumps a day because a) i wasn't getting enough to justify the extra pump and 2) DS wasn't always finishing his 3rd bottle. i sent some milk from my freezer stash for that 3rd bottle for a while, and eventually just replaced it with solids. so if you're pumping enough for 3 bottles, or trying to use up your freezer stash, then go with it. but if you want to start cutting back on pumping sessions as you approach 1 year, then you could substitute in more solids. it's great that you're nursing on demand at home- that is important to help keep your supply up.
  • I'm having a hard time getting enough for three bottles during the day because my son recently went from nursing at night every three hours to sleeping through the night. HI His Dr told me I could supplement with formula to add to his bottles but I rather not.
  • i agree-  i think you're better off substituting solids than formula if he needs more during the day.

you could always add an extra pumping session in before work or after your LO goes to sleep, but obviously sending solids requires far less work. ;) and you'll probably want to transition down to pumping less so that you can stop pumping once your LO is 1 year.
  • If I give him less BM, do I need to worry about him getting less nutrition?
  • if you're nursing on demand at home (and offering the breast before solids while at home), and offering healthy, nutrient-rich solids, i wouldn't worry.

kellymom has good guidelines on incorporating solids into the diet- https://kellymom.com/nutrition/starting-solids/solids-how/

  • Thanks everyone! This makes me feel so much better!
  • Also, I found this link from Dr. Jack Newman very helpful, especially #3 - 6.
