Frequency of nursing

DS is 6 weeks old and eats every 2 - 3 hours, but I would say it's more like every 2. Is this normal? I feel like he should go longer by now. At night he eats at 10:30ish and then sleeps for 3-5 hours. I would say he eats 10-11 times a day. I EBF DD for 14 months and she was totally different in the beginning! I had to use a cold washcloth on her face to keep her awake and she nursed every 3 1/2 hours because I would wake her up. She was tiny. DS never sleeps, actively eats wide awake, is always wanting to eat, and is big! Should I try to hold him off with a paci?

Re: Frequency of nursing

  • My son ate every 2ish hours until he was about 5 months old! He was also really alert and hated sleep as a newborn...it was rough! He's 8 months now, and usually goes 3-4 hours, but it's not unusual for him to have days where he's eating every 2 again. Sometimes I'll hold him off with a paci now if it's really inconvenient, but I wouldn't at 6 weeks. I think all babies are just totally different :) hang in there mama!!

  • it varies for us. now that we are feeding on demand LO averages about 5-7 sessions in a 24 hour period, about 30-50 minutes of nursing each time.

when we were nursing more frequently and i was waking her up for sessions she would only nurse maybe 10 minutes at a time.

  • LO ate every 2 hours or less for a really long time once he got over his newborn-sleepiness that lasted for the first week or so.  He's always been a big nurser (and still is) - so I don't think that's out of the ordinary at all!

  • My DD is 6.5 weeks old and seems to be on the same schedule as your LO exactly.
  • Thanks guys.  I will continue to do what I am doing.  It's tough to keep up the 2 hour nursing schedule with my DD who wants to go out and do things. I nurse in public or in the car, but it sure is tough to get my 2 year old to cooperate with "sitting still" while I nurse her little brother every hour and a half (since nursing/burping/changing takes 30 minutes).  I went to target today to try on some nursing bras and had both kiddos screaming in the changing room!  Not leaving the house tomorrow! ugh
