Test results question

Nurses or anyone else. Just wanted an opinion. I called to get my glucose test/bloodwork results. Glucose level was 129 and they want it under 130. Red blood cell count, RDW and hemoglobin was below normal levels but the nurse said "she didn't think the doctor would be concerned". I was borderline on the glucose test with Emily also, but the other levels being off are new to me. Any thoughts? The nurse was talking so fast I had to ask her to slow down twice. I'm not very happy with lack of monitoring and just wondering if I should be concerned about the results. I asked for a call back from the doctor but that won't be until Thursday.

Re: Test results question

  • Low RBC/RDW/Hgb typically means anemia. It can also be an indicator for thalassemia, but you would probably have been diagnosed with that with your first complete blood count. The doc might have you go back in for a ferritin count to verify your ability to absorb iron, and they might possibly advise you to take an iron sup - but based on what the nurse said, it does just sound like anemia.

  • Thank you! I'm already taking an iron supplement (25mg). I'm going to up my iron intake with whole foods and hopefully my levels will balance out.

  • Try not to overdo it until/unless she checks your ferritin levels - not all anemia is caused by iron deficiency, and taking more than you can absorb can just cause other issues... anemia can be caused by anything from blood loss, to drinking too much water, to genetic conditions, to B12 or iron deficiencies, to pre-eclampsia. I'd wait to hear from the doc before upping your iron supplements.
