We were having this discussion today at work and I wonder where you all stand with it. If someone comes to your house to do a service of some sort (cable, plumbing, etc), do you expect their vehicle to be marked or is a work shirt acceptable?

  • SS: depends on the service

plumber/electrician --he can come in a marked van, jeans and a tshirt. or an unmarked van, and a uniform with his company name, etc.

cable company - probably needs both.

general contractors/cleaning service - one or the other..but not required..just preferred.

  • I'm ok with shirts. I know some people that do cable installation and they have to use their own trucks. It also depends on the size of the company. We had a plumber and it was just the one guy, no need for a uniform but his van was marked.

  • I definitely look at the vehicles.  Company shirts can be found at yard sales, donation sites, etc. and are too easy to replicate.  I usually ask for the name and a description of people when I know they are coming to work on something.  If they show up without letting me know, I will call the company for verification of an issue before letting them in.

This is exactly what I said! I see people buying shirts from Goodwill all the time for stuff they don't belong to or never went to.

I voted "Doesn't Matter," but I meant that as either or. Work shirt or marked van, one or the other (or both) is good for me. Or a card, some way I can identify you and hunt you down if you fuck me over.

I put vehicle plus shirt but I guess I'm overly cautious since it's usually just me and the kids in the house with any repairmen.

If someone showed up at my house purporting to be with AT&T and didn't have a van/uniform I would be suspect, but many cleaning services, plumbers, electricians that are smaller businesses may not have a marked vehicle or clothing.
    Exactly this.
