STMs Was Your Labor Easier/Faster/Earlier If You Dilated Early?

Had my first cervical check (ouch!) in the hospital last week at 34 weeks, 3 days and the nurse was surprised to find that I am already 2 cm dilated and 50% effaced. I know you can walk around dilated for weeks without going into labor, but I'm wondering if there's a better chance that labor will be easier or faster? Please say it will, lol.

  • Hmmm....I can't answer this because I never get cervical checks done.  My labors were very fast and I went at 38 weeks with both.  I have no idea if I was dilated at all before then.

  • I wasn't dilated at all my last check before going into labor (a week prior). DD was born on her due date after about 18 hours of labor. I've heard there's not really any correlation, though it's always nice to see progress.

I don't get checked, so I can't say. Mine were both early (37 weeks with my first, 38 with my second).  Both births were fast. My motto is...do whatever you can to relax and stay out of your body's way. If knowing about your progress helps you relax, great. If it makes you nervous or anxious...then it will make it harder.

Edited to fix typos...English is hard.

  • I was dilated at maybe 1cm the week before I had DD and had a pretty fast  labor at about 12 hours.

  • With DS i dialated (i think 3 or 4 cm) was contracting for about 2 weeks. I was induced at 39 weeks at 5:30 am, water broken around 10 am(maybe 11 am), DS born at 1 pm.

Labor went very quick after I got an epidural.

  • Yeah the GBS test requires you to be swabbed down there. I figure while she is down there, she might as well check my cervix too.
  • I had mine yesterday and the butt swab was a nice surprise...def wasn't expecting that!
I got to do my own vag/butt swab...its the little things that give me some resemblance of control ;)

  • With my first I went into labor and dilated on my own at 39 weeks (ended in emergency csec because they told me to labor at home for as long as I could and it turns out he had flipped and was feet down and I was 8 1/2 cm)
With my second I went into labor on my own at 37 weeks and things were a bit faster, he was my vbac baby.
This time they don't expect me to make it into august (I'll be 37 weeks this Saturday)
Soon to be mommy of 3!

  • I had both kids at 39w2d. But I was in labor with dd for about 24 hours but didn't get into painful labor till around 5. I pushed for an hour with her and with ds I went into labor after having my membranes stripped. He was born in 10 minutes. I also has my membranes stripped with dd.
