October 2014 Moms

VBAC Check-in?

I've seen VBACs mentioned here and there but wasn't sure how many of us O14 moms are actually hoping for one.  The VBAC board here on TB is pretty dead and I'd love to talk with others who are dealing with similar considerations and thoughts.  I wanted to throw it out there to see if any others were interested in having a regular check-in to talk about plans, questions, things you're doing to up your chances of success, etc.  Maybe every other week or even once a week as we get closer to our due dates?

Thoughts?  If there's interest I'd be happy to get us started this week!

Re: VBAC Check-in?

  • I'm hoping for a VBAC, but I'm not really optimistic.  I had a c/s with DD because I never dilated or went into active labor on my own and at a week overdue, my fluid levels were still increasing instead of decreasing like that should have been.  So I'm not an awesome candidate for a VBAC, but my OB is on board, and we'll see what happens.  So far my whole pregnancy has been healthy and great, so that's good news.  I'll have an ultrasound at 38 weeks to see how everything looks with baby boy.

That said, I signed the paperwork the other day to have a tubal ligation done in the event that I do need another c/s.

  • I'm undecided at this point. I change my mind daily. I'm a good candidate for a VBAC but I do not tolerate epidurals (v. low BP) so if I do VBAC, it would probably have to be med-free. I don't want another dramatic birth story.

  • I'm hoping for a VBAC.  I had an emergency C-section with my 3rd baby b/c her heart rate started dropping drastically with contractions at around 5cm.  Then suddenly it dropped to 40ish bpm and stayed there no matter what we did.  Turns out the cord was tightly wrapped around her neck 3 times, causing issues when baby was descending.

My doctor actually pushed hard for me to attempt a VBAC at another hospital (the one he and I work at doesn't do them) almost 2 hours away.  There are some conditions I had to agree to, like being induced at 39wks, but I'm mostly ok with them.

  • I am really hoping for a VBAC!  I had a C- Section for my own personally medical issue, nothing related to the pregnancy.  Now that it has cleared up, we are all on board.   At 28 weeks I was already 100% Effaced and at 29 weeks when I was going in for C- Sections apparently i was already having contractions (the nurse was showing me on the monitor) So hopefully with that things were moving in the right direction. They will do an ultrasound as well around 36-38 weeks to measure baby boy and make sure he is not 9 Ibs or larger.  My doctor will let me go a week past my due date and if I haven't gone into labor they will induce me.

My Husband and I's biggest concern is of course my Doc is going to be in Europe during my due date.  So hopefully we will meet the back up doc to make sure he is on board as well!

Hoping this really works out for us ladies!

  • I'm hoping for a VBAC.... I didn't progress past 4 cm after 26 hours of induced labor, including cervadil and a balloon, which I'm pretty sure is what got me to 4. However, talking to the midwife at my last appt who was with me most of my labor last time, said it would be optimal for me to go into natural labor around week 35. Apparently I hemorraged pretty bad with DD, my labs were critical but never receieved blood. Basically the closer I get to my due date the more likely i'll have to csection. I want what is best for me and the new LO.

  • @slsl509 my BP dropped when I got my epidural after like 4 rounds of meds once it was up, it stayed up, pretty shitty feeling though

I have been trying my best to be go-with-the-flow this time around too.  Our decision has been made to try for one, but I am still kind of up in the air when it comes to how far I'd be willing to go (i.e. consenting to an induction if I go past 41 weeks or if my BP goes up).  I also need to see if this baby is breech as we near the end, but I think it was just a freak thing with DS.  I think PP said it best - I'm hoping for nothing dramatic.

    @syllessa & @lisamahrt - I'm curious - what have your doctors said about your inductions/possible inductions?
That is one of the questions I have on my list for my appointment next week.  I know they will do it if they have to without using certain meds, but I am interested in hearing more about how it typically works and what the additional risks are for a VBAC induction as opposed to a regular induction, if any.

I would be interested in a VBAC check in. I had a C-section with DS1 due to failure to progress and am on the fence on whether to attempt a VBAC or not. I had an easy recovery from my 1st C-section which is one of the reasons I'm leaning towards a RCS.

I will be discussing more details about my induction at my next apt, so I'm not yet sure exactly what methods we will be doing.

The primary reason for it is my distance from the hospital, coupled with the fact that my other labors were only 7ish hours start to finish.  If thing were to go wrong between home and that hospital, there is nowhere else to stop, no cell signal for 90% of the drive, and only one gas station in that entire stretch.

  • ashie0610, I do not know the specifics yet on what they all will do regarding the induction and complications. I am waiting for that information as it gets closer.

I'm hoping for a VBAC. My emergency C was such a disaster, it really did a number on me emotionally and physically. I'm hoping I'll get to VBAC and that the experience will be somewhat therapeutic in dealing with ppd etc. So far all looks good, I found the ONE practice in my city that is pro VBAC as referenced by ICAN and they say I'm a "perfect candidate" so it's just a matter of making sure I do whatever I can to keep everything on track.

  • I'm glad there is a group here that is interested!  This seems like it's been a good first check-in already.  I'll post another thread in more of a check-in format next week to keep us going. :)

  • I'd be interested.  I pretty I am going to try for a VBAC.   I had a c-section with my daughter due to failure to progress.  Went into labour on my own at 40+4 or 40+6 (depending on who you talk to) and 21 1/2 hours later she was born via c-section.   She was occiput posterior and I never got past 8.   In addition, I couldn't relax through my labour pains and I had hip labour and I think she may have also had her shoulder up by her head.  Anyway, not sure a VBAC will be successful but I'd like to try!
