Trouble TTC

SA Question?

DH's SA came back with poor motility and morphology. Also, he had a high white blood cell count which indicated an infection. My RE said that after a round of antibiotics the SA could improve. We are going to do another SA within the next couple of weeks. Just wondering if anybody else has this issue and if it improved. I want to add that his blood work came back normal and he is at a healthy weight. He doesn't smoke, but he does like his beer. I also put him on vitamins, I'll try anything at this point.

Re: SA Question?

  • My XH had the same issue.  His SA did improve post-antibiotics.  Encourage him to eat well and drink plenty of water.  Some people also swear by Fertility Blend for men (or is it Fertil-aid?).  I hope things are better next time around!

  • Mine also had poor morphology.  He also loves beer, but he really has been making a point to cut down.  So might be three months before we see improvement.  I also put him on vitamins. He hates them.
  • Same issue here. I got my DH the everyday multiple vitamin for men (gummies). Haven't don't another SA but I'm hoping this helps. The ER wanted to put him on another vitamin but it was very expensive. :-/

  • Sigh, why are men such babies about all this? :) Last SA showed MH had a low level of bacteria in the sample, I wonder if that is a similar issue. We're going to ask about it.

MH's best SA was when he cut down on processed meat and soda. Could have been coincidental. But he just won't keep up good habits for the months necessary! He gets spurts where TTC feels very "real" and he'd do anything, but then he's back to his old habits.

Mine is terrible about remembering his vitamins (C,D,E,selenium, zinc, multivitamin), but he is really enthusiastic about taking them when he or I remember.

  • *child briefly mentioned* My DH is a huge pain with this. I try to cook healthy but I can't control what he eats while at he's at work and I find fast food receipts all over the place. I think because he isn't really over weight he doesn't feel he needs to worry. His love of beer is what worries me the most. He has cut down, I'll give him that, but he still drinks more than he should. It was never a problem until his SA came back not so great. I will say the doctor said there's no real evidence alcohol is the reason, as all of his friends drink the same and they all have babies. On the plus side, he takes his vitamins. Just frustrating!

My DH has had multiple SA at this point and does a little self monitoring as well to keep an eye on things...

He has a blockage so nothing has changed his 0% motility, and everything else is in normal range. However, he stopped drinking, stopped the Bluetooth and cellphone in his pocket and such and we saw an increase in numbers. (He already eats healthy and takes a million vitamins, but cut back on Vitamin C because he probably takes an unhealthy dose of that and wanted to see if that helped).

He did take an antibiotic to see if that would remove the blockage/increase numbers-- Our RE said it wouldn't hurt. After a week or so, my DH was still at 0% but saw a lot more twitchers, so I would say it helped.

Just a note about the antibiotic-- My DH was a huge baby about it and/or gave him serious side effects. I had to personally chaffer him to and from work because he couldn't stand the train and had a serious lack of energy. It was a rough week or so when he was on that, just to give you a little warning (i.e. stock up on ::insert favorite adult beverages here:: for you)

  • H was on antibiotics for a month for white blood cells. We were told that it was due to an infection (UTI or VD). It did slightly helped his morph. He is now wearing boxers and taking vitamins. He was prescribed a low does of clomid to help his count. Our insurance is still not allowing the pharmacy to fill the prescription. H has to call the doc to see what they can do.

  • Thanks. He has always worn boxers, never knew about the cell phone in the pocket thing. They said the high white blood cells were from an infection but that it could be from various things. He doesn't drink alcohol daily, but the weekends he drinks every night. Right now he's sitting at the other end of the couch eating popcorn and drinking Gatorade, I give up!

  • You should read Making Babies. There are a some interesting things that affect male fertility.  One patient in the book was drinking well water, which had radon in it.  The author (a doctor) had another patient who had one mix drink every night and that was enough the affect his sperm.  His argument is that when you are young things like drinking don't matter as much, but as you age they can play into fertility.

My husband drinks occasionally during the week and on Fridays and Saturdays, but he has a couple of days a month when he really overdoes it.  We moved the other year, and many of his new friends are all mid-20's and I had to remind that he isn't that young anymore.  He has agreed to slow down, and has been doing well, especially considering it's World Cup.
  • I also think everyone is different. Most of my DH's friends and co workers have pretty much the same lifestyle as him, a few of them even worse. Every one of them have had a baby within the past 2 years. I sometimes wonder if it's a combo of my age and his issues that are the problem, as the only difference between them and us is that I am older, all of their wives are late 20's/early 30's
