  • Congrats and welcome!

I have a good friend who is also 39 and pregnant post weight-loss surgery (I can't remember the name of the one she had). She is now 36 weeks along and everything is looking great.

I think good prenatal care, of course, is key. Good luck to you!

  • I have a 5 month old and am 8 years post gastric bypass and 35 yrs old. I had a good pregancy, frequent u/s for growth and blood work to check my levels. I have had absorption problems in the past and was getting iron transfusions. I didn't need them with her though. I gained 30 lbs with her then the last month 20 lbs from fluid. I lost my first 35 two weeks after having her. She was 8lb10oz. It was hard to gain in the beginning bc every pound was a pound I lost- I talked a lot with my Ob and sometimes would turn around on the scale so I didn't know. I have gone back to some of my bad habits like soda and snacks but they are getting better now that I have to work at those last 10 lbs. hope everyone has a great pregnancy.

I'm 38, first time pregnant (just 5 weeks), and about 9-ish years post RNY. I'm still down about 90lbs from my heaviest, but still large enough to look like I could use another whack at it. ;)

I, too, have resumed bad habits including (diet) soda, snacking, etc. but I'm more cognizant of my habits while it's not just *my* body I'm feeding.

It would be nice if there was a group here for obese moms and moms-to-be. Have I just missed it?
  • Hi, I'm also 39, due in January with my first child. My gastric bypass surgery (the fobi pouch kind) was in 2008. So far my pregnancy has been pretty kind to me. I haven't been as sick as I am just normally and although I'm eating more than normal, at 13 weeks still haven't got back up to my weight pre-pregnancy. However, baby is still getting plenty and even shows up about a week further along size-wize. Try not to worry too much, I've been assured the baby finds the nutrition it needs. In fact a close friend of mine - also had bariatric surgery more recently, was horribly ill ( poor thing) with hypermesis. It's a very severe form of morning sickness and she was hospitalised several times for dehydration. The point is, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
I find it hard to be sure I'm getting all the nutrition I can, but have been making myself healthy smoothies to slowly sip through the morning at work to kind of top up my meals. Try and do a mix of 60% vege ( celery, cucumber, kale, spinach) and 40% fruit.it gives a nicer balance so not too much vege taste and not too sweet. I add any of these: coconut water, apple juice , green grapes, kiwi, or berries. ( I don't like bananas and can't have citrus) amp it up with sunflower seeds, cashew nuts, pepitas, avocado ( about a quarter or half) and if you have it a teaspoon if flax seed oil or coconut oil for some healthy fats. It takes a bit of experimenting to find your favorite taste but that gets me through the morning. I guess the main thing I try to do is eat the best thing I can if it's only something small, so it's all good food. A little and often. The biggest change is for the first time in 5 years I get hungry - all of a sudden, truly and feel sick to the stomach hungry, so then I know I've gone too long without eating. My handbag is littered with mini bags of dried fruit, nuts, kind bars, and other good snacks for emergencys. Well done you for proving them wrong! Enjoy your pregnancy and all the best. Hope I haven't bored you and you get some use from my post.
