NWMR: potty training

DS was 2 in May, he wasn't showing a ton of potty training readiness signs, but I'm a teacher and home for the summer so I thought I'd give it a shot. I don't really see how children in daycare get potty trained if they have to stay in diapers for the early stages. I started summer break Monday, so when I got home I put him in his underpants.

I was actually shocked at how well he's doing. He was only having about 2 accidents a day. He was staying dry during his naps, and even waking up dry in the morning. Things seem to be going down hill though. Yesterday he had 2 accidents in the morning, did great all day, then another 2, very small accidents at night. This morning he had one at home and 1 while out. He has told us a few times he has to go potty, but its mostly us asking him if he has to go. If he doesn't have to go he'll refuse to even try, but if he does have to go he will. He's staying dry for hours.

I'm getting kind of frustrated that at almost a week in he's having 4 accidents in 1 day, but I also feel like he's doing well enough that I should keep with it. WDYT? Is this normal potty training or should I wait till he's a little older? DD was a few months older, but I feel like she picked it up alot quicker. I know girls are supposed to be easier, which is why I'm really surprised DS is doing as well as he is.

I think expecting him to stay dry overnight is a lot to ask.
As for the day training, it's completely up to you but I wouldn't want to spend my summer frustrated and cleaning messes. Yeah, he will eventually train but if it were me, I would wait till he was more than ready, then go cold turkey. At that point, it should only take a few days. I did it with DS the week between Christmas and New Years.

He just happens to be dry when he wakes up. I'm still putting him in diapers at night and will be for a while. I'm just thinking since he's up to that that maybe that is a good sign he is ready

I think it sounds like he's doing well. I'm starting DD this week. She turns 2 on Friday and shows all the signs of being ready. And she's getting resistant to the idea, so I feel like we better just do it before she digs in more. We bought her an Elmo potty this weekend, and she's enjoying sitting on it. So good thoughts coming our way are welcome!!

I think he's doing great. My daughter is the same age and we started at 22 months with the naked method. She did great for a few weeks after the initial few days, then had a few epic accidents, then got back on track. It also took her a while before she could go on command (like before leaving the house to go somewhere) and wouldn't tell me she had to go for at least a month (which was fine at home because she'd go on her own, but nerve-wracking when we were out).

The whole thing is a huge learning curve for them and us. I think all kids try to test the limits of their bladders or put it off because they don't want to stop playing. That might be the cause of some of his accidents and I think it's just part of the process. I think he's doing great and I wouldn't go back to diapers now.

It sounds like your child is doing fine at this point. I am pretty relaxed about PT because when a kid is ready and excited, it typically goes pretty quickly.

FWIW, I'd say my children's daycare is a much better environment for PT than my home. All the kids are offered the potty at scheduled times, and any time they ask. The bathroom has 3 child-sized toilets, so they can see each other and learn from their peers. We can send our kids in underwear at any time.
