TTC question (for SIL)

Does anyone know if being too thin can make it more difficult to get pregnant or is that an old wives' tale? My brother and SIL are having a bit of a tough time and she is super thin. Not like sickly thin, but super fit, runner, vegetarian thin. A bunch of the older women who were around this weekend were talking about how she would have trouble getting pregnant if she didn't gain weight (not where she could hear them an not knowing they were trying) and I was just wondering if there's anything to that.

Re: TTC question (for SIL)

  • Yes, if you don't have enough body fat you won't ovulate. Obviously this is not an absolute but it's the reason many professional athletes, especially runners, and gymnasts, and many professional ballerinas don't get a period at all.

  • I'm also really light. 5'7" and 105. I did have to go see an RE, but that was as a result of my atypical PCOS. I did ask about my weight, because DH was concerned it was a factor, but the RE said that it most likely was not.

  • Before I got pregnant my BMI was 16.5. I was underweight but never missed periods before it. We weren't trying to get pregnant but I didn't have any problems getting pregnant because I was "too thin".

  • Thanks, ladies. I am guessing that her weight isn't an issue. She is super thin, but takes really good care of herself, so like PPs have said, a dr would have mentioned it if that's the issue. I will pass on your recs! Thanks!
