TTC After a Loss

Can't quit coffee

Good morning ladies. So I stopped drinking coffee while TTC the first time. After my loss, I started again. Now that I'm TTC should I stop completely?? I drink one to two coffees per day. I'm a sucker for Starbucks white mochas! Since a lot of women stop drinking coffee when they are pregnant, does the same apply when TTC? I hope this is not a silly question.

I love my coffee too. I can only tell you what my dr has said, 1 small cup of coffee is ok. I do know that a tall coffee from Starbucks has more caffeine than a tall latte. Lately I've been drinking lattes during the 2ww and coffee the rest of the month. This way I reduce caffeine in the 2ww and if I get a bfp it'll make stopping easier. Ultimately though you should follow whatever your dr says

That's really smart of you! I'm on the 2WW right now so I think I'll cut back. I know I'm addicted because I get massive headaches when I don't get my coffee! Thank you for the suggestion!

  •  If given a pot of coffee, I could drink it. I love my coffee..... made at home or Dunkin' Donuts/Starbucks , I crave it. While TTC, I will cut back and usually switch out one of the cups for decaf. When I was pregnant last year my OB said caffeine was ok in moderation especially since my body was used to high doses LOL.... I normally would order the tall at Starbucks and do half caff instead of a full caff grande or venti like usual. I agree with pp, whatever your doctor says is good for you I'd follow along with.

  • My doctor said one or two small cups a day is fine.  I started drinking 2 half-cafs a day which equals one regular.  During the 2ww I drop to one and one decaf. A lot of it for me is work breaks and when i socialize during the day.
  • @kflynn81‌ lol @ "high doses" I love that! I'm sure my body is used to high doses as well.

  • You are allowed a cup of coffee a day when pregnant. So i think drinking it in moderation when ttcal is fine

  • My personal philosophy is that I refuse to eat/drink like I'm pregnant until I'm actually pregnant. I drink 1 cup of coffee a day, usually, and I don't plan on cutting back or stopping unless I get a bfp.

Even small amounts of coffee are fine while you're pregnant, as others have already said. Unless your doctor has told you otherwise, there's no need to quit coffee right now.

  • Wicked is right, 200 mg a day is the recommended limit if pregnant. A tall latte from Starbucks is about 95 mg. Of course, you should always follow your doctor's advice. My personal philosophy is moderation. I will say it is almost always better to do the original (read: as found in nature) version of something than the altered version. If you are that worried I would just go without.

  • Getting curious--does anyone else here drink black tea in large amounts? My OB didn't mention caffeine at all, and I did not ask. It's interesting that caffeine consumption in connection to TTC and pregnancies is always phrased in terms of coffee, but much less often tea.

Also (other people have mentioned this book before), Expecting Better has a pretty detailed chapter on coffee consumption. Disclaimer--that book is not written by a doctor but by an economist who reviewed some medical studies. But @mayalopez, it might still be an interesting read for you.

@VesperLynch - I'm a tea drinker too- I prefer my caffeine iced :)  Tea generally has a good bit less caffeine per volume than coffee (https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/caffeine/art-20049372), so I'm guessing that's part of it, but I agree that it's interesting that it's not addressed as often as general caffeine intake but as coffee intake (must just be more prevalent).  I know there's the stimulant concern but I also look at the dehydration aspect.  I never cut it out or bothered cutting down before a BFP though.

Yeah, I am not an expert, but it seems safer to drink regular coffee in moderation than non-organic decaf.

    I've read this too.

  • I stick to my one cup of coffee a day, whether I'm TTC, pregnant or not. I figure I'm not going to give up my one cup if I do get a BFP so why cut it out while TTC? I'm sure my one cup is way under the 200 mg allowed. And I'm a bear without my coffee, so there's that too. :)

  • This might sound disgusting, but since TTC,  I've been mixing decaf with regular coffee in the coffee maker to lessen the caffeine, since I usually drink 2-3 cups per day. I know it's probably not a big deal now, but just trying to get my body used to functioning on less caffeine.

  • Depending on the size of the mug, two cups of coffee is probably just fine =) I know when I was PG, I got seriously bad heartburn when I drank coffee, so I HAD to cut it out, and on top of the hormones, that made me pretty nasty to be around lol. Drink it while you can ;)

I don't cut out much while TTC. I love my french press and espresso. I have 2-3 shots/cups a day. When I get a positive, then I will cut back to one cup a day. Seems reasonable to me.

  • I switched to decaf a few months ago... I still have 2 cups, but both decaf.  I really couldn't tell much of a difference and I think my body is slightly tricked into thinking that I'm having caffeine.  My RE told me last week that I should steer clear if I could, but if I had to then 1 cup was ok.

  • I drink my usual amount while TTC, which is 2 cups per day. 3 if I'm on a deadline or am especially bitchy and exhausted.

I will cut down to 1 cup per day after a BFP. My go-to coffee drink the last time I was KU was 1 Starbucks grande vanilla latte per day, which has 150 mg of caffeine (so under the 200mg limit that most docs recommend). It was an expensive but delicious habit that I justified because I wasn't drinking wine anymore :)
