Maternity leave

I'm new to this board so apologize if this has been asked over and over again.  But, I just want to get a general idea of how long people usually take for maternity leave.  So... if you work, how long will you plan to take off work after baby arrives?  Obviously, every situation differs, so just curious what your plans are.  TIA!!

Re: Maternity leave

  • I only get 6 weeks for vaginal and 8 weeks for C-section because I just started a new job (if I wasn't on BR) and I'm not covered by FMLA.

If I stayed at the old job, I would have had 12 weeks off, not all paid.

  • I also only get 6 weeks and don't qualify for FMLA.  I might get 1 additional week of sick time.
  • I'm staying home for about 9 weeks that will be paid (sick/personal/vacation)

Then going unpaid but with benefits for another 3-7 weeks.

Then going PT (15-20 hours) for about 8 weeks

Back to FT around July-August.  Baby will be around 6 months then.

  • I am taking 12 weeks in total.  8 weeks paid (using accumulated sick days) and then 4 weeks unpaid.
  • I am off for a little over 3 months.  I used all of my sick days though to get that much paid time.   Talk to your Human Resource Person, they should tell you about your time.
  • depends on your company and the state you live in.

I get 6 or 8w paid after birth (vag or c/s)... then 12w unpaid FMLA from the state.  A new law was just passed in NJ that gives 6w partial pay - which i think will go towards the 12w unpaid (so six will be partial pay- but still nobody understands the new law so who raelly knows)

either way- i'm off for approx 4 months after giving birth.

people generally take 4w off before birth- under STD (not maternity related- just health related).  Though, i will be taken out work earlier b/c it's twins and the nature of my job.

  • I have the option to take up to a year off and my job will still be there when I get back, but it's all unpaid. I'm opting for 6 weeks (30 days), plus what have I saved up in sick and personal leave.
  • I get 6 weeks off and I don't qualify for FMLA.  The place I work at is pretty flexible, so if I feel like I want to take more off, I am sure they wouldn't have a problem with it.
  • I am taking 8 wks off for maternity leave. I am elgible for FMLA, so I could take up to 12 wks, but I don't want to take any time unpaid or completely drain my vacation and sick time, I won't have much left though.

I get 6 wks STD pd at 66 2/3% of my salary and will use sick time/vacation time to make up the other 33 1/3%. I could get a longer time w/ STD if I would have to have a c-section.

  • It's largely dependent on where you work. Many women don't get paid maternity leave or are not eligible for FMLA which allows for 12 weeks off. This puts a lot of women down to 6-8 weeks before they go back.
  • I can take up to 12 weeks with my job since i have been here over 6 months. I am taking the stadard 6wks as of right now. I may take a bit more, and they are fine with that thank goodness.
  • My school gives me 6 weeks paid and 6 weeks of FMLA.  That takes me to the end of May; school gets out the middle of June. They agreed to give me the last 2 weeks (unpaid, with benefits) so i don't have to go back until September. So I'll have about 6 months, all but about 2 paid.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • I can start Short Term Disability (STD) two weeks prior to my due date, so my last day will be 1/30.  Then, I get six weeks paid for a vag delivery, 8 weeks paid for a c-section at 75% of my salary.  I can then take another 4-6 under FMLA, but that isn't paid.

Also, something that surprised me--STD and FMLA run concurrently, and it's not 12 weeks of FMLA.  The time that I'm off for STD counts under FMLA so it's 12 weeks total leave under STD/FMLA, as in I can't take their 6 paid and then another 12 unpaid.... you might want to check into if STD and FMLA run concurrently because I had no idea that was the case.

  • I'm losing my job bc I chose not to move to Atlanta in a few weeks since my company corporate office is transitioning there over the month of January. I couldn't imagine moving 7 months pregnant and switching Doctor's, finding a place to live, having to make new friends again, being another 7 hours further away from family... etc, etc. So they're letting me work as long as I can pre-baby and then post-baby...I'll have to find a new job. Fun times. DH says as long as we can swing it financially and if I'm happy at home, I can do that. I think I would like to work part-time, at least, though.
  • I could take up to 1 year unpaid.  Any accrued sick time you have can be used--I have about 12 weeks accrued sick time.  That lines up with the beginning of summer vacation, so I'll be off for about 5 months total (I'm a teacher).  I realize how lucky I am!
